Are you looking at the coast in particular or the west side of Oregon? Beautiful country. I've been through there many times and we vacation on the Oregon coast.
PimTac coast in particular. Was there last year in October. Loved it. South of Portland to gold beach. In between those city's along the coast. Low property taxes.
Oregon has a income tax but you may know that already.
I was in Newport for a few years. That and Coos Bay are the two large towns on the coast. The Portland crowd favor up north like Cannon Beach. In the summer the tourist traffic is heavy till you get further south. Incidentally, the better beaches are on the southern half of the coast. Gold Beach is really nice. If you travel the coast you will see a definite change from the tall trees of the north to the lower shrub trees of the south. It happens just south of Newport.
One thing to consider, look at a map of the coast. There are not too many highways connecting back to the I-5 corridor. The further south you go the more isolated it gets. That might determine your decision.
Our favorite spots on the coast are Yachats, Gold Beach, Brandon and Cannon Beach. Newport is the better town for bigger shopping but in reality Portland or Eugene are the two main cities on I-5.
