Property Taxes

Sorry but just to add. I've been working since I was 14 (mom would not give me a quarter for hot rod magazine. Great woman valuable leason). Now at 65 retired collecting SS . If I do not get out of here or get a job (walmart) this state WILL consume my savings. Will never allow that to happen.

Are you looking at the coast in particular or the west side of Oregon? Beautiful country. I've been through there many times and we vacation on the Oregon coast.

PimTac coast in particular. Was there last year in October. Loved it. South of Portland to gold beach. In between those city's along the coast. Low property taxes.

Oregon has a income tax but you may know that already.

I was in Newport for a few years. That and Coos Bay are the two large towns on the coast. The Portland crowd favor up north like Cannon Beach. In the summer the tourist traffic is heavy till you get further south. Incidentally, the better beaches are on the southern half of the coast. Gold Beach is really nice. If you travel the coast you will see a definite change from the tall trees of the north to the lower shrub trees of the south. It happens just south of Newport.

One thing to consider, look at a map of the coast. There are not too many highways connecting back to the I-5 corridor. The further south you go the more isolated it gets. That might determine your decision.

Our favorite spots on the coast are Yachats, Gold Beach, Brandon and Cannon Beach. Newport is the better town for bigger shopping but in reality Portland or Eugene are the two main cities on I-5.

PimTac thank you for the info. I did notice The further south you go the more isolated it gets. I though it would be reverse. Wife loves Gold Beach. People say to me why go there to one place warmer. I tell them 40 degrees in winter and -40 in Vermont is an 80 degrees different. When we were there last October i asked some locals in Gold Beach when does the mist go away. They said what mist

$15K property taxes? Ouch. Big ouch! On a $290K property?
How the heck is that computed? Do you pay sales tax? State income tax?
Wow, CA is based on your purchase price, plus adjustments that are not that bad.
I pay 10% income tax which is a lot, but my property taxes are not that bad, but I bought at a good time.

Best of luck to you.

Yes we pay sales and income tax. They base it on how many children each town has. We only have 12 (older community) so the state says we need to pay more 1.7 million more. The state sends this money to the town's that have a lot of kids. What do we get for that money NOTHING not even a thank you card. Think taxation without representation. The taxes are eating away any profit you may make from what you paid and what you can sell you house for. Guys I BS you not. We have people who own lake front homes maybe 200 foot frontage 3,000 SF homes who pay in excess $25,000 with appraise value of $500,000 that they cannot sell at the appraised value.

Wow, that's just wrong. It is thievery; stealing.
I am a person who believes those who can afford more should pay more (like me). We have an incredible life in America; it ain't free.
But what is going on in your area us just plain wrong. I had no idea. My house is waaaay more than you are talking about and I pay like $4,000.

Either way, you will have to live somewhere and pay high rent for an equivalent home / neighborhood.

That's how it is in Wisconsin, my rent for a little duplex with a garage and yard is $500 a month, property taxes on most any average house is $3500-$7000 yearly depending on where you live.

Add into that I don't have to do any repairs and I'm willing to pay the small premium

Exactly. You get screwed when you buy, when you sell, and all the time inbetween.

Speak of the devil. Yesterday Maryland sent me a vacant lot appraisal for a property I purchased
two years ago. Nothing on it at all. They appraised it at a $24,500 loss. I'm guessing because I
got a deal on it. According to the state they have to appraise all properties once every three years.

However my new tax bill is up a even 20% from last year. That is about $450. More.
Also they note differently than you read here that the appraisal is for the homeowner so that they accurately
pay a fair tax rate instead of an inflated one based on more lucrative time period. Interesting.
No big deal as they do offer an appeal process...

Yeah...I don't miss the unpaid part-time job that is maintaining a house.

Never felt "screwed" buying my first home for $100,000 price and $3000/year tax with 3% down. Walked away 6 years latter with $260,000 sale by owner. I put $3000 of my own money and some time "renovating" it.

All at age 22 when my friends were renting away.

So many parents waste thousands of dollars on private schooling instead of simply picking a place to live in a better community with focus on top tier schools. Selling our home when kids leave will be easier due to excellent schools our taxes pay for.

Just a counterpoint to all the moaning on taxes.

^^^^^^^

There does come a point though where it becomes confiscatory.... Wonder why people left NY so much so since the 1970s that the state had a net loss in population???
And no weather was not the main reason.... Taxes. That's why.

I'm not against taxes. But you can get to a point to where it is truly confiscatory in nature.
