All you have to do is pull a permit and get it inspected. I put a 100 amp sub panel in my parents garage to power a wood working shop. Ran the all the wires and conduit myself and made all the connections. Got it inspected, no problems.
 
I once pulled a permit for wiring an outdoor socket with a timer to run Christmas lights. Inspector came in, I showed him what I did. Guy didn't do jack. He never even checked to see if I had the wires reversed. Nothing. Felt like I had wasted my money. But it did make it official.
