I hear too much oil is bad...it'll come off and coat the sensors. And too little is bad...it won't filter properly.

I've sprayed the oil on so that the purple color is evident throughout the pleat. But it looks nowhere as saturated as when I got the filter new (i.e. it came with a much darker shade of purple). Getting it to that point, though, would seem against the reoiling instructions.

How do you determine the right amount to reoil? Or is it not as important as what I've read?

Don't know where you get "purple" from but, here's how I do it....

After cleaning and ensure thorough drying. Spray oil on both sides until uniformly red ie. no naked areas. Then with a paper towel, tack-dry both sides to remove excess oil. This will give a similar appearance as it came out of the box ie. completely oiled without drools, drips or puddles in the pleats...and no risk of MAF damage!

Make sure you just let it sit somewhere for a good hour or so before reinstalling it or even thinking about using more oil. The oil wicks throughout the cotton and evens out. Be patient.
