Proper oil level

Accordin to the manual of my car the dipstick level should not drop down to MIN grid or not exceed the MAX grid (no more detail than that ):



This is how it really looks like when wiped clean:

• So, should I be OK if I keep the oil level between these two grids?
• On my last top up, I put exactly 5 litres (as per manual) and the dipstick level is halfway through the MAX grid. Is this excess?

Yes in between those two parts is good that means it has enough oil in it.

that is an odd design. I would think it should be within the smooth sections, but cannot explain why the hash-marked areas are there.

What is make/model of vehicle?

This is an odd designed dipstick. Looks like something out of the middle ages lol. In between is perfectly fine. I fill mine up to the very top hole. I'm one of those....

Anywhere between min and max is good.

Anywhere in either hatched area, or the space between the hatched areas, is OK. Most cars have hatch marks through the whole acceptable range.
