Proof of MaxLife Cleaning

The black stuff is not gritty at all. So I don't think it's metal.

My guess at this point is that ML uses unique detergents and seal conditioners that found some area of the engine it cleaned up a tad.

I'm going to stick it out for 3k miles.

Valvoline does claim their HM oils have more detertents than they synthetics.

Do you have a magnet you can try on it?

I do, how should I do it?

First oil that removes this stuff wins.

wipe some of the stuff onto your finger and see if holding it really close to a strong magnet lifts it off? I dunno, LOL!

Well, ML seems to be liquifying something that was in the engine.

You could have had some cabonaceous material behind the piston rings or in some nook and cranny that had accumulated a bit of gunk.

I would have a UOA done with particle counts to see if it is a solid or not.

I would also cut open the filter if you can to see if the filter is catching it as well.

Quote:
Some PU will clean that right up in no time.

If ML is cleaning, switching to PU might not show any cleaning at all after usage of ML. It certainly wouldn't hurt anything to switch.

Question, shouldn't oil be able to remove this black stuff? I have new ML 5w20 in the engine now. About 250 miles on it. Shouldn't it come right off? It literally wipes off so easily. I would have thought it would have been cleaned up by now.

Weird.........

I dont know if oil should be able to clean that "gunk" for lack of a better word. I am going to pull a OVERKILL card, and say put some M1 of any grade in and see what happens.

Could this black material be from the underside or threads of the fill cap?

Uhm,you should know by now, that with only 250 miles on an oil change, you cant expect miracles. Put some miles on an oil change before jumping the gun and making conclusions.

Buster, above is certainly a possibility. I've seen many very grungy oil filler caps and messy gaskets. I don't know if it would cause what you're seeing, but it does make me wonder. Now you'll have to take off the valve cover and photograph everything just so we know if it's localized or all over.

I'd have patience. You're way early in the OCI, and I'd go 2 or 3 OCIs before I'd worry. Besides, unless it were a bad batch of MaxLife, which is certainly possible but extremely unlikely, it's not going to kill your engine. If it's a worst case scenario and your engine is in trouble, MaxLife won't kill it any more than M1 will save it.

That is very possible. Good point. Wait and see.

Garak, I couldn't help but pull the next MaxLife advertising slogan right out of your quote!

j/k

On a serious note, I agree-let it roll!
