I've used many different synthetic oils in this engine over the course of 164,000 miles, but none of them produced anything like this. This is after about 1,500 miles on MaxLife.

I suppose MaxLife does have a unique, powerful deterent system. They claim it's the highest in the industry, fwiw.

It wipes right off, as you can see by photos where the metal is showing.

could the gunk not be wiped off before? what I mean is, are you sure the black stuff was sticking before?

That black stuff I've never seen before. I even noticed a bit on the dipstick, which never happened previously with any other oil.

It comes right off though. I think it could be from the engine seals. That's one possibility.

I have to ask, if you never noticed it before, does that mean that the Maxlife is producing this crud? I don't believe that is a desirable trait.......

All oils have detergents, anything else claimed etc is marketing

You guys on these forums are hilarious! All the years of motor tear downs we've done, most were clean inside. The only ones that were not, were the ones with neglect and or other mechanical issues.

I really don't know where it's coming from. I'm surprised actually. Prior to this, looking through the fill hole it was extremely clean. The engine is very clean inside. Where this particular stuff is coming from I really don't know.

I suspect it's either from the seal conditioners, or ML has some special detergents.

Obviously, but some have more than others.

Interesting indeed. My own experience with cleaning and Maxlife was a disappointment, even PYB seemed to do better. But I think it's a fantastic oil, just not the first one I think of for cleaning.
