I use RotellaT syn 5w40 in my 94 Land Cruiser with 294,000mi. I have always used 1qt for first 3000mi then 2000mi/1qt, 1000 mi/1qt etc.
I go about 8000 mi/oil change. Have had Oil Analysis and they were fine except for some gas in oil they said if could be from not driving long enough before change.
Is this normal for oil consumption to increase as the oil gets old?
This winter my oil consumption jumped to 2000mi for first qt then 1000/qt 900/qt etc.
I was getting excessive oil through the pcv. I installed a catch can to the pcv when the oil was old and would get several tables spoons/100 mi.
I changed the oil and got several tbs for 2000 mi, my consumption is 1qt for that 2000mi.

As my consumption goes up it looks like my consumption through the pcv goes up.
Is this normal?
Does oil, as it gets old, vaporize more?
Should I not go 8000mi/change?

I am thinking that I might have stuck rings as my consumption jumped and there is a loss of power. Can my oil vapor through the PCV cause sticky rings? Can the oil with 7000+mi cause rings to stick?

I was driving 140 mi/day but now the vehicle sits most of the timeas I have a car to drive every day.
Should I change the oil more often or go to a non syn oil and change at 3000 mi?

I have a heavy consumer at 180K.

What worries me is the "change in oil comsuption". As long at the rate of consumption stays the same I'm comfortable with current plan. I also find dirty oil gets consumed faster. I don't like adding a lot so I would rather change it and base my OCI on this.

As I suggested for your Supra, do some short flush OCI's with inexpensive oil/filters until consumption stabilizes. I've done up to 10 - 1K OCI's and could see the oil getting cleaner when draining (shine light thru).

W50 oil will help reduce consumption but COLD winter would be an issue were you are and I'm not a fan of 5W50.

I think you results are showing that 8K is too long. Now that it's done, make the best of it. Clean it up and evaluate your options while doing so.

It is normal in any vechile that has consupmtion issues to consume more as the milage builds dureing the oil change interval. I think it is due to fuel dilloution and more dirt in the oil.

In a vechile that does not have any consuption issues it is normaly the first 2000-3000 miles were you notice a little consuption as the lighter componets boil off. Most synthetics do well in resisting this.

If you are concerned about your rings being stuck you can either do an Auto-Rx treatment or two or you can apply a solvent to the top of the pistons through the spark plug holes. This is then allowed to sit over night.

Since you have a different daily driver I would not worry to much about the LandCruiser as it will continue to march on for a long time to come. I would probably switch it over to Delo,Rotella,or Delvac 15W40 dureing the warm months and 10W30 Rotella,Chevron Supreme,Havoline dureing the winter months. Since it is not a daily driver you can probably go to a bi-anaul change so ever 6 months.

Congrats on the 294000 on the land cruiser. Toyota really makes some stout engines. I second what JB was saying. You could use a dino 15w40 with auto-rx to clean things up a bit. Then you could look at a 15w40 amsoil product, or their heavy duty diesel 10w30 and run it year round in Wisconsin.

Do an Auto-Rx. Afterwards, shorten your OCIs to 6K. Dilution, residue & possible carbon buildup from old age are the likely culprits for increasing consumption inside the OCI.
