Pro football absurdities

There's no advantage to the kicking team to "fake" an onside kick-- that is kick it deep instead of short. The other team would only get the ball and win by running out the clock. The rule changes before this latest one had already made it almost impossible to recover an onside kick. The onside kick should be a set play that has a better chance of recovery.

Or maybe some variant of the go for two where you have to score from the 25 yard line, but if you succeed there is a bonus of no kickoff, your team keeps the ball. If you don't score, the other team gets the ball on your 25 yard line.

Before long, the NFL will be flag football. I have thought for a long time about league wide fixing. Sometimes things are just better left alone, especially by lawyers.
It has been semi-flag football for quite some time. I quit watching it a long time ago.

"don't get to close to the passer"
"don't get to close to the receiver"
"actually, never touch the passer....... or the receiver, just ask them politely to stop"

100% true

Read the new kickoff rules...
The kicking team will kick off from its own 35-yard line. 10 members of the kicking team will line up on the receiving team's 40-yard line (25 yards in front of their kicker). A minimum of nine members of the receiving team will line up between their own 30- and 35-yard lines (five-to-10 yards in front of the 10 members of the kicking team).

So, from what I gather, this would be to increase the probability of a kickoff run gain or very violent hits?= big fan faves and rating boosters. That is what I get out of it.

The NFL is all fixed anyway...
I do wonder about this myself. With legal (or unpreventable) bookmaking online and with some of the calls one sees, you do have to wonder. Money corrupts sports just like anything else.
A shame.

They do want to encourage yard gains rather than touchbacks. Kicking teams however have been continuing to play it safe by kicking through the end zone. The touchback should be moved out to the 35 yard line so it is less of an advantage to the kicking team.

Having the two teams start closer to each other, and not move until the ball lands, actually makes it less violent. Under the old rules, there were many pointless injuries from the 10 receiving cover players colliding at full speed with their counterparts somewhere in midfield trying to knock them down to clear a potential path for the receiver. I say this was pointless as it happened before the players even knew if there would be an attempt to catch and return the ball.

I don't know why they even do kickoffs. They are silly. Give the ball to the team at the 20 or 25 and move on.
The FG kickers are so good now, there's no urgency to get to the end zone. If you make to just past mid field, you can still score points. TD's just aren't necessary. While I'm ranting, get rid of punts and put the northern teams into domes. -15F playoff games shouldn't happen.

Usually a team only does an onside kick when the situation is absolutely desperate. Not really a surprise to the other team I would guess.

A part of me agrees. A home field advantage in a playoff game at Alliegiant stadium, in 120 degree temps would not be fair for say the Patriots, or vise versa if the Raiders went to Foxboro. I would argue the same in Denver, where the air is thinner.

But, That is the way of the game. Ice rain sleet snow etc....gotta be tough.....

....or at least it is how it used to be.
