Priming your oil filter when you change your oil

Honestly I've thought of prefilling but never have done this. However in the interest of not loosing sleep over this I will compromise and at least dampen the filter media. I figure my engine oil pressure will go out 0.34 seconds quicker than with a media completely dry.

Honestly I figure the difference of using full synthetic oil of the same weight vs. dino, brutal cold winters included, over the course of 250,000 miles will result in less wear than prefilling new filters with dino. But hey - I could be wrong.

This is based on synthetic supposedly clings to metal surfaces better than dino.

Gary Allen, bumping the engine is a splendid idea, I used to do it long ago. It seems that using the Amsoil 0W-30 TSO combined with the EAO filter, makes prefilling the filter unnecessary. The oil gets where it needs to go in a flash. My oil light just blinks on and off, even with a fresh filter installed. There is none of that pre oil pressure engine noise that usually precedes dry filter startup.Has anyone else experienced this using the TSO + EAO combo?

I like the idea of bumping the engine as well. Might be a little difficult in my Cummins though.

I prefill my filters. I have a dual remote setup and don't want to wait for about 2 quarts of oil to fill the filters before it hits the engine. I fill and let the oil soak in util they are as heavy as the old ones.

I also prefilled my horizontal Tranny filter when I changed out it out. If your quick your spilling little to none.

Of course it can. I've done it. Have to be careful but yes you can pre-fill a horizontal filter.

You got me thinking here. On the GM 2.4L Z24 engine I have a clear shot at the horizontal filter mount which is on the front of the engine. I probably could get a full filter on there and not spill more than an ounce. However on the GM 2.2L OHV engine, the filter mount is behind the engine and nearly impossible to even see. You have to mount the filter by feel on that one. By the time the filter finally found it's way to the filter mount, I would probably spill several ounces.

I'm going to try it on the 2.4L Z24 next time.

I do it when its possible. At my old job the only ones we had to prefill were the ones on the big trucks. But some of those filters alone hold as much oil as my car total!
