Prielli P5 or Michelin Destiny for my 97 Camry

My Pirelli P4's have an 85k treadlife warranty. At least in my size. If I get to 80k miles on mine, I'll be a very happy camper.

Sorry,Sciphi,I looked at the the P6. You're right the P4 does have an 85 k warranty. Main point is to get the tire with largest amout of warranty, keep up with the rotatations, then hope the tires wear out early so you can get a new set at a prorated price.

No worries!

I'm in agreement. Long tire warranties along with regular rotation is a good thing!

I ask alot from tires. I want them to be all things for my driving style and climate conditions. I realize that a tire can be a mixed bag of nuts but, which nuts do you like best in your mix(what's most important)?

Reviews must be read and try to narrow down as best as possible, similar vehicles and climates. What does the buyer want most out of a tire other than rolling down the street and lasting a long time. Everybody wants a tire that last a long time!

I want tires that are smooth/quiet, good riding and handling(bias toward ride), track straight on the highway(my FIL calls this handling) but, it's tracking. Handling is whipping around corners and strong/quick lane changes IMHO! I want tires that balance well 1st time and that require less rebalancing during their life expectancy. I also want tires that have low enough rolling resistance for decent MPG but also good bite into the asphalt for hard stopping. And, good snow/ice traction. Doesn't have to rival true snow/ice tires as the snow removal in my area is supurb!

I don't think that I'm asking too much since I have found many new tires that meet my criteria and you can find tires today that can match your cirteria(I'm speaking to anyone).
I like ride over handling but, that's not to say that I want the tire to be mushy! And, you can go the other way; better handling than ride with ride still being important. There are tires out there to match just about anyone's criteria. You may have to pay more money to meet your needs but, there deals out there and the internet is the way to find the best deal.

I know people that are fine with the cheapest tires for their car and live and drive this way all of their lives. I've tried that route and I don't like it.

Lol. The thing is. The cheapest tire is not, necessarily, the lowest cost tire. Find a good tire with a long warranty, that wears quickly, and your cost, net of prorations, may be the same or less than a cheap tire with no warranty over the same amount of miles.......and you have fresh rubber every 3-4 years.

FZ1, I agree! :) This too(tread life) is where the ratings or other internet research come into play. Example: I was sold on the Kumho Solus KR-21 from the great reviews until I started hearing too many complaints about short life for an 80,000 mile tire. Maybe 40,000+ is tha real expected life. I still may buy them if the price is right. I have introduced many family/friends to the KR-21's and they love them. Most of the people in our circle of family/friends in the recent past, have spent way more on tires and have been very disatisfied for one reason or another. The KR-21's are still a highly reguarded tire in their performance, quality, ease of balance according to installers/owners and doing most things well especially in the areas I want most out of a tire.

I have Pirelli P4's due to the Kumho's always being out of stock in my size when I was searching. "Everything for a reson"! Love the P4's but, was really interested in the KR-21's as they handle well but probably ride a bit better than the P4's. Both being good tires for the money especially online w/local installation.

Because everyones driving styles, vehicle wgt, tire size and climate/roads are different, YMMV, we'll never know until we experience a particular tire for ourselves.

Sure, we all have different driving "Facts". I want a soft, smooth riding,80,000 mile warranty tire, that will wear out in 40,000 miles. I'll give up some handling,if I have to,but that's just me.

To me the most important quality is that tires come round and with proper care (inflation and rotations) stay round. I cannot abide out of round tires or out of true brakes. There are certainly many more tire options that will stay round with proper care than there used to be. However, I have found that inexpensive tires do seem to be harder to keep true and round. Beyond staying round, the important qualities to me are that the tire handles reasonably well and that it give reasonable mileage. I change tires at around 4 or 5/32 based on the consumer reports statement regarding wet performance when tires get down below 4 or 5/32. The S or T rated tires that I buy for the 97 Camry usually give me about 60 K if they're replaced at 5/32. I'm pleased with that mileage.

When I went to Discount tire they told me that the P3000 tires on the car (I incorrectly remebered them to be P4s) still had about 10K left in them even in light of my intention to pull them early. I'll be revisiting this issue in 8 months or so and will choose between the P4 and Destiny then based on who is offering the better deal at that time. Thanks again for the replies.

Check back, here, with me before you buy those Destinys. I don't like the "Whine" at highway speeds and you may not, either.

We have no ficking rain in So Cal in summer and only few rainy days a year in winter, I went all the way down to 1/32 or less on the tires.

Ended up buying a new set of tires afterall. When I was putting air in the tires I noticed that one tire had much less tread than the others. I had forgotten that the tires were purchased at different times and only checked the tread depth on one side of the car. When I realized that a tire needed to be replaced, I had to decide between 2 and 4. I could buy two Pirelli P4s for around $190 and could buy four for around $260 by trading in the old tires(they gave me $80 for the old ones) and also collecting the $40 rebate. This seemed like pretty much of a no brainer; so I ended up with 4 P4s. After I've had them for awhile, I'll post my impressions. Since I've owned multiple sets of Michelin Destinys, I'll include a comparison of the Pirelli and Michelin.

Glad you got the Pirellis. I tried the Michelin Destinys on my 02 Accord V6. My impressions were easier turn in but not as soft a ride as the Goodyear Assurance Comfort treads I had been running. Then tried the Michelin Primacy. More money:Worse ride! Finally, got the new Goodyear Assurance Comfort Tread Touring. Saved at last! Less harsh over road imperfections and no Michelin Highway Whine! Slightly more turn in effort. Each tire, driver, ride, and drive combo, is unique. I'll trade some handling for more comfort and less road whine, any day. But that's just me. Hope this helps, someone. P.S. Thank you Discount Tire for your generosity in not charging me for the 2 addittional remounts.

I drove the car about 180 miles today to go to a football game; liked the P4 tires alot. Thanks for sharing your impressions of the Goodyear Assurance line. My wife's 07 Camry will need tires in a few months and it's not likely that I'll spring for the Michelin Primacy again. Although I like the tire, she doesn't notice tire differences. As long as the tires aren't square, she doesn't care. It seems foolish to spend $150 per tire to buy the Michelin. Right now I'm considering the Pirelli P6 and Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max. Both are about 1/3 less expensive than the Primacy. Like you, I'll trade a little handling for comfort. I don't corner the car hard enough to need a crisp handling tire. My friends who went to the game commented on how quiet my 210 K 97 Camry is. Part of that was surely the tires.

Like you, I'm pleased with Discount tire. They're offer of $80 for my used tires was very fair and allowed me to get away from tires that with really different tread depths.

Glad you like 'em. Nothing worse than driving on tires you don't like. Re the Michelins: the cheaper Destinys were more comfortable than the Primacys. The Primacys whine was noticeably less than the Destinys.

Teddyboy, I think you'll like the P4's. They are a nice tire on my 04 Altima but in the colder temps, I reduce the psi by only 2lbs(still in spec and safe) as to reduce the impact harshness over expansion joints on the hihgway. You may not experience this in NC but I do in in my state. My sister still has a 98 Camry that my nephew is now driving (120,***mi) and it's still sweet as far as ride/quiet. Firm riding tires don't seem to bother the Camry(BFGoodrich TouringTA's). My 04 Altima, different story!

Char Baby, I had heard that Nissan was going for a more handling oriented market and that as a result the Altima rides a bid more harsly than the Camry. Personal experience suggests that this is somehwat true of the Accord. Your post indicates that what I heard about he Altima is true. Do you find that your Altima handles pretty well?

OH Man! does this Altima handle especially for a long wheel base(111 inch WB) car. It handles better than I could personaly push the car due to lack of experience at greater volocity and Im just gettin old. The ride doesn't suck either(it's not bad actually) but, I only have the 4 cyl. The V6's have an even firmer suspension. I run 225-55-17 in the summer and the stock 16" in the winter and even the 205-65-16 handle quite well, all due to the Altima's suspension.

The Accords(I've had several)are also quite tight handling as many of my friends/family have newer ones down to about '06. The Accord is a bit more refined in it's ride/handling tradeoff and overall quality along with being a more solid feeling car. What the Accord doesn't have today is soul. It lost it's soul several models ago and this is what I like about the Altima(great steering, brakes, suspension). It's not a loud, rough car, there are just quieter/smoother in it's class but I'm happy!
