pricing of lawn mower filters is wacko - I went thru waldo mart today - all their briggs and straton oil filters were $12.47 each. And those are probably the popular ones.

what gives?

Likely volume. Were they real B&S or aftermarket? It may cost more to cram lots of area in a small package. Try to find the specs, or cut an old one open. Look for bypass valves and ADBV. Then see if something small and cheap, such as a PF 47, will fit. Many of the Japanese cars use very small filters, but they tend to use the larger 20 mm thread. Likely the B$S uses the same 3/4'' one as many American engines. Come back with the thread, area, bypass setting if any, and maybe somebody here can point you to an automotive filter that will work. You can buy a huge ST 3950 for $2.

I am a dealer of submicronic bypass oil filters. I haven't checked the B & S but my Sears lawn tractor with the Kohler 20 HP engine takes a Toyota, Nissan, VW, Chrysler and others with 3/4-16 threads. The same goes for my shreader/chipper with the 18 HP Kohler. I have sandwich adapters from Jegs high performance catalog 772-282 3/4-16 thread Ford.(www.jegs.com)
I have oil lines going to the Motor Guard oil cleaner. I change the Motor Guard once a year and the full flow filter about every 2 years. I don't drain oil. The filter on my 87 Camry four cylinder will fit the adapter. You could screw on a big Ford FL-1A if you had room. My generator has a clearance problem so I hooked the Motor Guard up in the same way I do the cars. What you need is a filter with an internal relief valve which is all Japanese engines and Ford, Chrysler gas engines. Most GM engines have no relief valve in the filter because it is in the filter mount. NO problem the threads won't fit. If it's a small filter there is a car filter that will work fine. None of the full flow filters clean oil. There is almost nothing in oil large enough to be filtered out by the full flow filter if the engine is in good condition.

I got tired of paying inflated prices for lawn mower parts so bought a Sears mower; the air filters are 2 for 6 bucks.

Just out of curiosity I went to the Wix site and tried to cross reference the Briggs filter #50490 with no joy. However, when searching under "off road" applications I found references for Techumseh, Briggs, Kolher....

Once you have the Wix number its easy to cross ref to a cheaper brand if thats what you want.

That's what I did with my JD oil and hydro filter, cross reference on the Wix site. It took some work, but I now have the numbers and don't have to pay JD big dollars.

I did fine the oil filter in the Fram book at Fleet farm, and cross referenced it to a Purulator and bought one of those.

I have a Kawasaki motor in my JD. It runs really hot oil-wise so I wanted an oil cooler. It too takes the same 3/4 x 16 threaded filters, like all the Fords I have. Bought a sandwich adapter and will mount the cooler as soon as I can find a good place for it.

The B&S engines take oil filter part number 492932S. That cross references to Champion Labs PH3656, or WIX 57035. An alternative is PH2835 or WIX 51348.

To add to what kloppilt posted, there are additional cross references that can be made in terms of filter sizes that will also fit.

Shortest to longest (smallest to largest) are Wix 57035, 51056, 51348, & 51516. I use the 51348 in the 18hp B&S in a Cub Cadet mower.

These will all reference very easily to the NAPA part numbers as well.

We use the equivalent ST filters as well in the mowers as well as our ATV's.

I have a 26hp Briggs in a Craftsman GT5000 garden tractor. I use a good old Motorcraft FL400s. Equivalent is a Fram PH3600 and just a tad shorter is a Fram PH3614. Or you can cross reference to whatever brand you wish. For $3.00 or so the Motorcraft or it's Purolator cousin is just fine with me.
