Pressure Washer bought the farm

Started to pressure wash a few hours ago. Got about 15 minutes into it. Lost water pressure, then "bang". Looks like the cheapo AR pump seized and the Honda GC 160 puked the connecting rod.

I think I can rebuild the GC, but the pump is toast. It is one of those Excell 200 dollar 2.2 gpm washers. Oh well, I did not pay for it, it was given to me.

The pump is one of those "wobble plate" for vertical shaft engines. Pump was "factory sealed" and did not need oil.

I will be tearing down the engine this week. I can pull the starter cord, and there is no resistance, just a little clanking. Just changed the oil last month with Pennzoil Conventional 5w30, and I know that would not be the problem I just might use the engine on a mower. I am sure I will find a push mower on someone's curb during trash day.

Just bites. Now I will have to borrow my neighbors trailer rig to finish washing down the screened pool enclosure.

I own a pressure washer 50 50 with my Dad. Lent it to my Brother and it came back leaking at the pump. It has the Honda GSX160 engine that runs good. I think he might have let it sit too long before he ran the water.

Maybe the pump overheated. I am just going to replace the pump.

At least my Brother paid me. Will have to think twice about lending him things in the future.

You're not running hot water through the pump are you? That will fry the pump in short order if it's not designed to be a hot water pump. Another thing is when storing the pump, you should run some windshield washer fluid through it. It keeps seals lubricated and keeps it from freezing in cold temps.

No, no hot water, just straight from the hose bibb. I just got the thing in January, from my BIL. Lord only knows what he did to it before hand.

I had one of those Excell $300 pressure washers, after a few years the pump broke. I replaced it with a brass pump I bought on eBay. Works great, but motor is hard to start/pull with new pump.

I am looking for a new pump, but the cost of a new pump will probably cost more than the entire unit. This thing was given to me, so I will probably tear down the Honda engine and see how bad the damage is. I am hoping the clanking is just the pump parts rattling around, but there is almost no resistance when I pull the rip cord.

Looks like we can't blame an oil or other lubricant for this failure.

re: winter storage
I thought for the winter storage you are supposed to run the antifreeze used for RV's in storage-the red stuff. Does that have the same composition of ww fluid?

Well, I have always drained the pump after use and it only sits for maybe a week. I use it quite a bit to clean off the lawn mower after cutting, and with the pollen here in Cent.FL, it does a great job of blasting it off the pool screen.

Well, pulled the pump, it is shot. Good news, is after I pulled the pump, I slowly pulled the starter on the Honda, and it sounded normal. So, I turned on the magneto, pulled it and it started right up. It did not seem to like not having a load on it though. Now, to start looking for a new pump.

Dave,their are ton`s of pumps on E-Bay. I got a new Faip one season wonder on their for a back up.
