Premium Plus vs. Pureone?????

Other than the silicon ADBV, is there really that much difference between these two? I have a L14459 and a PL14459 in my garage now. Looking at the box, the Premium Plus says it filters 96% with the SAE multi-pass test performed at Purolator labs. The Pureone says it filters 98% with the SAE multi-pass test performed at Purolator labs. Is the 2% that big a difference to justify the $2.99 vs. $5.99 price tags

? Are these the same SAE tests, or are they different...I can't find any SAE test numbers? I know the Pureone has silicone ADBV, but for 3,000 mile oil changes...does this really make that much difference?

Taking the filters out of the boxes, they look identical inside (from what I can see). Same center tube, same base plate, same can-different paint job.

I plan of running each one and seeing if there is any difference, but I probably won't be able to tell. After the run, I will cut them open to see what they look like on the inside (I'm to cheap to cut open new filters

).

Just a thought...wanted to throw this out...what do you think?

Brian - in my collection of cut open filters for my vehicles, I have the PureONE PL10111, and PremiumPLUS L10111. The PureONE has a silicone mating gasket along with the silicone ADBV, but other than that, the construction of the filters is the same. It is probably safe to assume the differences between the PremiumPLUS and PureONE are limited to the use of nitrile vs. silicone, and the filtering media. Unfortunately, I haven't found any tests which actually compare and measure various filtering medias, so you're probably going to have to trust what Purolator has printed on the box, unless you're able to get your hands on the SAE tests they cite.
It's going to boil down to peace-of-mind vs. $3.00, and that's a decision you need to make for yourself. If it helps, I also do 3k OCI's, and I always opt for the PureONE.

IS the PL10111 a PF47 equivilant? What is the application? Does it use cardboard endcaps?

If you cut them open you'll find the L14459 has about 100 sq in of media and the PL14459 has about 114 sq in of media. Purolator also claims a different media in the PureOnes and people who cut open new ones say than can see a difference in the media. I've only cut up used ones and it's hard to see a difference. I'm too cheap to cut open new ones.

I haven't seen the two filters prior to use either, but that extra 14% media in the Pure One could provide the extra 2% retention. I have seen this happen before in development of cartirge filters.

Another option is to use the Motorcraft FL-810, $2.77 at Walmart. People who cut the Motorcraft filters open claim it's a PureOne filter element. I didn't verify this in this size, but it was true of the FL-1A I cut open.

novadude - Yes, it is the PF47 equivalent. I've got them for my wife's '00 Grand Am GT. No cardboard, all metal used.

From the photos of filters I've seen (unused filters), the media papers look quite different. Premium Plus had a coarse looking media, sorta like rough newspaper which became wet, and then wrinkled while drying. The PureOne paper has a visibly smoother, flatter, and more uniform surface. As pointed out, the PureOnes also have more area due to their added pleats. In my opinion, there's enough added features to justify purchasing the PureOne.

If you're using a 14459, try using a 24458 instead. The inner cartridge is about 1" longer, adding roughly 50% media area by my estimation, and the bypass settings are apparently the same. Baseplates and gaskets are identical. FYI, the 24458 is the OEM replacement for all late 80's Hondas.

I have read somewhere that the PureOne is more restrictive than the Premium Plus. Anyone else have a report on this?

If your look at it from the amount of dirt, the 96% filter lets two times over the 98% filter i.e. 4% divided by 2% = 2x. Most of these test are at 20 microns or higher.

do not like the bypass design of 'Purolators' being it is on the wrong end along with the one "pure one" that I cut open had a bypass that stuck open when I pushed on it. Wonder how many others kick open without closing? Still have the cut one that stuck open too show. Why I ask do Motorcraft's have the good 'Wix' design bypass at the correct end and can be bought at wal-mart for $2.77ea, yet are made for Ford by Purolator????????????????????????

Hmmmmm, all filters short of WIX made ones have the bypass valve on the top endplate, and a few purolator designs. Purolator even says on their website that they've incorporated the front/good style bypass in most of their filters. Never seen one on a premium plus or pureone

novadude - The date printed on the box for the PremiumPLUS filter is 2001, and the date for the PureONE is 2002. Perhaps Purolator changed its' manufacturing process at some point.

The best thing to do is buy the filter you plan to use and cut it open before you buy another to use. That way, you'll know what you're getting. I would like to know when the filter with the cardboard endcaps was made. That would give us a better idea. Maybe you can e-mail Purolator and ask them to explain. I'm curious myself, but I don't use the PremiumPLUS. I bought it solely for comparison/reference when I stocked up for my "cut-open-filter collection".

what's going to be interesting is to see what's going to happen to Wix when Dana Corp sells them down the road to some other company being they stated the first of the year that they are going to sell them. The first company that bid on Wix but was turned down was Purolator.

The owner of Purolator vehicle filters is ArvinMeritor, a major manufacturer of parts for new vehicles.

(Purolator and Purolator Facet hydraulic and industrial air filters are owned by Clarcor, who also owns Baldwin/Hastings.)

We that is interesting. Someone had posted pics on this site of that EXACT filter, and it had cardboard. Did purolator recently get away from cardboard?
