I cut open a used PureONE, Premium Plus (now called Purolator Classic) and a ProLine 14459 for my '95 Acura to see the differences visually.

My semi-educated opinions: The ProLine and Premium Plus (Classic) are very similar. Almost identical. The difference in the amount of media isn't worth the extra $1 for the Premium Plus, IMO. It was hardly noticeable. The only way i'd probably spend an extra dollar for the Premium Plus again is if the media was actually different/more efficient. The PureOne had the most media by appearance and was also the most uniform, even after 5k of use in below freezing temps. The Premium Plus had 3k on it and was just removed from my car less than a week ago. The ProLine sat in my garage for months and was used for my Auto-RX Rinse phase for 3k miles (IIRC) as well.

ThirdeYe,

Nice pics and observations.

As for that "extra dollar" - you'll save it and more when the Purolator Premium Plus (Classic) goes on sale, as it does quite often at AA and Pep Boys.

Thanks for picture. I got FAR 4 Proline oil filters along with 20 quarts Peak oil few months ago. I wasn't sure about using it in '94 LS400 with more than 240k miles, now after seeing the picture I think it is better than Fram.

In my opinion, it is better than Fram by quite a bit. I'm only running the Frams because I got them for 50 cents.

I wouldn't hesitate to use any of the three Purolators again in the future.

Hee hee! where in the world do you find deals like that?
(I'm usually a day late and a dollar short on sales and coupons...)

I found them on clearance at a local thrift store that sells stuff that are discontinued/overstocked from Meijer. I got a bunch of Tough Guards and Extended Guards for only 50 cents a piece. I left the regular Extra Guards behind but for only 50 cents I regret not grabbing those too.

Good looking filters. All of them.
My area farm supply store switched from Purolator to Fram and my local supply of Purolators is gone.
I recently got some from Amazon and they are a good price after rebate.

I would compare the ProLine to the Purolator PremiumPlus(Classic) before buying, the last time I looked the ProLine for my vehicle was quite a bit smaller than the Purolator. It might not be all applications but I am sure it is some of them.

Wow, that's odd. Thanks for posting that. In my application it seems they're all the same size, but I guess YMMV. At least you'd be able to tell by the can that the media is smaller before purchasing.

Your welcome, I am glad your application is the same size. I remember reading awhile ago some people saw other sizes that were smaller but I do not remember how many and what applications they were for. You certainly can tell by the can the media is smaller.

Since Botch bought Purolator they quite using the string and reduced the amount of media in the L 10193. You might try cutting open a newer L 14670. You can even see the difference from the outside. Both the STP 3950 and the Pronto 4619 look like they have a longer filter element than the Purolator.

Unfortunately, they both have the dome end bypass too, but at least are made in America by an American company.
