I see the Pennzoil platnium saying 46% cleanup on first oil change and some fancy art work on back? any info on if this oil cleans better than m1 or amsoil say? or would this be any synthetic oil i'm assuming it's a group 3?
careful... the print says "up to 46%" - which could be anywhere from 0-46%. it does have alot of detergent additives in it - I dont recall the exact amount but you could compare in the virgin oil analysis section. many people here are able to view the engine innards thru the fill hole and have noticed good clensing from PP. yes, grp III
I just purchased a five-qt. jug of PP 5w-20, though I could not locate the rebate form anywhere at WalMart.
The back of the container, at the bottom, in real small print, says something along the line of "46% better cleaning than conventional or semi-synthetic oils."
So they aren't comparing themselves, cleaning capability-wise, to M-1 or Amsoil.
I see it purely as a marketing statement. PP, M1, Amsoil, just about any quality synthetic will have a significant cleaning effect over conventional. That, to me, is one of the benefits of synthetic lubricants.

If you have that much sludge in your engine that you need 46% removed you got other problems... Otherwise it's just marketing like anything else.
Marketing-101:
1) Make the consumer think they have a problem that they need to address.
2) Sell them a product to address this false concern.
3) Make lots of money and laugh all the way to the bank
I find the % claims pretty laughable. I don't know how they quantify it. Same with shampoos - "Up to 300% more manageable". Or skin moisturiser - "Up to 50% softer".

Marketing is marketing but to back Pennzoil, they do show a lot of calcium in their UOA's. Heck, I don't think I have seen any other oil especially their 5w30 with more calcium than PP. Now if they claimed the 46% garbage and then showed little to no detergent additives, yeah that would tick me off more! Kinda like what happened with Mobil and is it group 3 or 4 and mobil not giving a straight answer. But lets not go that way!
The 46% sludge clean-up claim is certainly marketing hyperbole. But I will say this, Pennzoil also states that YB will clean out 15% of an engine's sludge in the same test; so they are clearly stating tangible figure of how much 'better' their synthetic is to their conventional.
PP 5w30 also is one of only two oils to meet the Honda/Acura HTO-06 spec (for turbo cleanliness?)...
So, there might be something to it other than recognized detergent/dispersant additive...
