I flushed the power steering fluid in my 2000 Ranger a few months ago while doing my 60K mile maintenance stuff. I put in Mercon ATF just like all the manuals said and the pump started groaning pretty loud on right hand turns. You could really notice it in a parking garage. The steering was unaffected otherwise.
So after I finished doing the front brakes yesterday, I decided to flush out that ATF while I had the front up in the air and put in M1 Syn ATF. I had read on here that several people had solved similar PS noise problems in this way.
It worked. No more pump noise. I wonder what it is about Ford PS pumps that makes them picky like that
