My 2002 F-150 spec's Mercon as the PS fluid. It was whiney and made "noises" when the temps were "cold". I first cleaned the system, via "turkey baster method" after 5 years, 25,000 miles, it was BLACK. I used Vavoline and ST Mercon's for the initial cleaning. Then I preceded to "TB" with the then Mobil 1 ATF, Mercon rated. It quited the cold temp and whiney noises a lot. I just bought some more of the now new Mobil 1 ATF to continue the "TB" drains.

My 1996 Contour spec's Type F ATF for the PS. After 9 years, 60,000 miles, the PS fluid was still red, not black at all. And the PS was quiet. I've just been replacing the Type F with more Valvoline and ST Type F ATF using the "TB" method and all has been well so far.

Try a flush with Mercon V in your 2002 F-150 (same year as my Expedition) and see if it gets even quieter.

Worth a shot.
