I bought 6L of AMSOIL ATF to do some PS fluid changes in our cars, and I'm going to do a few drain/fills on my wife's BMW transmission once I get more in.

Anyway, some of you may recall the strange affair of the "Phantom of the PS Pump", a mystery never fully explained. I expound ladies and gentlemen, this is the same pump that figured in the famous "disaster".

Amsoil ATF hath restored it, and fitted up part of it with quietness never heard before in this application. Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little illumination?

Gentlemen!

(anybody who is familiar with the base of the above diatribe please don't be too hard on me

LOL!)

Short version: When I changed the PS fluid in the Expedition to RP ATF, it got REALLY loud. A few drain/fills with Mobil 1 ATF got it back to a tolerable level, but the noise never completely went away. And I found that as it got hotter, it would get louder. It never effected the operation of the PS, it was just annoying.

I still don't know why it happened

Anyway, I figured I'd do a drain/fill with AMSOIL ATF, as three changes with Mobil 1 ATF got it to where it was and the worst that could happen is that it would get louder again. It didn't. It has been in there for a couple of weeks now and it is the quietest it has been since we bought it.

Very impressed!

Overkill. Vacuum the reservoir down with a mityvac and a rubber stopper.
This is really common with Ford PS pumps and this works!

I should do this even though it is quiet now?

The guy that came up with those pumps, plus the Ford guy whose decision was to continue using them for decades should spend eternity in h*e*l*l.Ford should have swallowed their pride and bought Saginaw pumps exclusively.

But they don't die, LOL, they just get LOUD!!!!!

I drove my old LTD on the highway for about 50 miles with a dry power steering pump. A hose let loose and the highway was straight as an arrow, so I didn't notice anything until I hit a minor curve. It growled for years after, but never quit working. A new hose and a fill of fluid, and it was fine until it got totaled.
