I believe so.

I've always loved trains but only became serious about them when I got into N scale a couple of months ago.
Lots of good railfanning in your area and just a bit further southwest into central GA. The CSX A-line is a main corridor for East Coast movement as well as Amtrak. If you can travel, Folkston , Cordele, and Waycross GA are places where you can see all kinds of cool stuff.

I'm hoping to make it back to the bluegrass show in Telluride next year. We've thought about that excursion for years. I'd like to work it in one trip.
Definitely worth the trip, even for non railfans. Also, if you can work in the Royal Gorge trip out of Canon City take advantage of that. I wasn't sure what to expect but it held its own. Not sure if this engine is running. This was taken in October 2011 as well.

I can believe it. That's Tower A-5, where the Metra Milwaukee Districts go their separate ways (north and west).

Fox Lake and Milwaukee are to the left, Bensenville and Elgin to the lower right.... Union station to the upper right.

This is our locomotive. Built in 1928, it served the route through Kingman to Las Angeles until 1953:

Many do not know, the first diesel electric locomotives were placed in service on the long desert routes. The old trails, tracks and Route 66 went from water hole to water hole. That is why the train in Bad Day At Black Rock has Spencer Tracy arrive pulled by a diesel electric instead of a steam engine. After the introduction of diesel electrics those small towns between Needles and Barstow, and many other places just dried up and blew away.

DO NOT do round trip. Take the bus back or have someone pick you up in Silverton. Trust me. You spend 8 hours on a train for a car trip that's 2 hours. The return trip is horribly boring. Us locals (used to) sit on the patio of The Palace restaurant (now closed) and chuckle as travelers returned after round trip. Little kids screaming and adults have a distinct zombie look. You just sat 8 hours on an old school train.

The Cumbres Toltec is WAY better and I think prettier. Seriously.

Also we've had the driest winter in the 47 years I've been here. I very much doubt they'll be allowed to run coal, if that matters to you. 99.9% chance they'll run diesels. The train has this wee problem of starting gigantic wildfires.....

Thanks for the tip!
