That's the same method Kawasaki specifies for my 24 hp V-twin.Here’s is the oil checking technique for a Honda GCV engine from an owners manual.

Thanks for this. I don't remember this from my HRX owner's manual and think it has a GCV engine too, but frankly assumed it was the same vs all the other small engines I've had before. Here’s is the oil checking technique for a Honda GCV engine from an owners manual.

Seriously? This one too?!? I would have though leaving the stick unscrewed would lead to greater variability vs screwing it in all the way.Same method for Kohler Command engines.
"Unthread and remove the oil fill cap/dipstick; wipe
oil off. Reinsert the dipstick into the tube and rest
the oil fill cap on the tube. Do not thread the cap
onto the tube. See Figure 6"
An empty oil jug or washer bottle jug works great!I happen to have a couple mowers where you have to tip them over to change the oil. I'm not a big fan as there's alway a mess to clean up. So a week ago my neighbor got a hold of 2 Harbor Freight suction pumps. The manual hand pump type, and he gifted me one. So I figured I'd give it a try. I did 2 of my 4 mowers with it. It worked better than I would have expected. And only took a few minutes each. You need to have the discharge hose in a can or bucket to minimize the splaching. Did both mowers and filled them with Fram brand 10w40 blended oil. They're both over 10 years old, and really don't use enough oil to mention.,,

I either pump into an old TruFuel can or use a plastic paint roller pan with the tip method.I happen to have a couple mowers where you have to tip them over to change the oil.
