I was due a filter change, I normally change my oil about 7500 and change my filter at about 11-12k, sometimes I go 2 full intervals but usually not. I always went 2 intervals on cannister filters, this one is a cartridge and sits on top of the engine, easy peasy.
I let the M1 Euro 0-40 crowd influence me into trying a run of it for cleaning purposes. I wanted to do a fresh filter during that run, so I went ahead and changed it and the oil early.
Out- PUP 5-30 and a Fram ultra. Oil had less than 5k. Filter still looks great at 12k, not too dark, zero gunk.
In- M1 Euro FS 0-40 and a Motorcraft. Older Motorcraft with end caps. I'll pull the filter out in a couple of weeks and compare it visually to the Fram. See if it's "darker or gunkier", then check it every ~1k miles
I'll run this until it warms up this coming spring. Goal is ~5k, if the filter does get darker or gunky then I'll change it early. If it doesn't, I'm back to slightly less expensive PUP. The loose quart was on rollback to under 9$. Was over 10$ last time I looked.
PUP is still 23 and change, same as regular PP. With buying the loose quart, this was about 9-10 bucks more than my usual oil change. Nothing I'll fuss about (my cheeseburger meal at Sonic last night cost more than that) but nothing I'll do on a regular basis, especially if I don't see results in the filter. This was purely to satisfy my curiosity and to reinforce my belief (backed up by data) that PUP is top notch stuff.
