About this "Maint Req'd" light: it goes off every certain number of miles, correct?

Any advice on my oil change schedule/which oil I should use? The car sits for most of the year as I live in a bicycle-friendly neighborhood. But I'd like to keep it sharp. I felt bad with the extended OCI because of the synthetic, but was that appropriate?

Thanks.

Out: Castrol GTX HM 10w30, Denso Filter
In: Castrol GTX HM 10w30, Microguard Filter

Miles on oil: 4,000

Main rear seal is still leaking, but the GTX HM has slowed it to the point of not being an issue, or at least not worth the money to fix. Over 4,000 miles I used 1/2 quart of oil.

Just changed my '13 Hyundai Tucson GLS today with Pennzoil Platinum and a Hyundai oil filter. I ended up picking up 0W-20 and didn't realize that it called for 5W-20 until I had already drained the oil. Oh well, I don't think it will hurt anything and I'll go with 5W-20 next time.
