No it was the 4cyl. I remember buying a quart of that graphite oil and putting it in there when it was low one time, I have no idea what else was in there either.
That Graphite prob did it in

I thought the odd fires were OK , it was the offsetcrankthrow even-fire that was weak?

My first truck was a 94 chevy c1500 with a 4.3l v6 and manual trans. My first oil change was at the pennzoil 10-min oil service with 10w-30 and they got me to purchase a trans flush because the fluid was low for $80. Ill never do that again!

Back then I used the cheapest oil I could find because I didn't know any better.

Then I became aware of synthetics.

Now, I use the least expensive oil I can find that meets/beats the OEM specs, because I know better!

My first car was a 1959 Ford Taunus 17M (not sold here in the U.S.) and its little 1.7 L four banger took two quarts of oil and didn't have a filter at all! I used 10W-40 Quaker State and changed the oil every couple of months, regardless of mileage.

My dad always used Veedol oil back then, which wasn't available in retail stores. He told me Mobil oil foamed in Ford engines, so I stayed away from that. I stayed with Quaker State for years, finally moving to Pennzoil 15W-50 when I bought a new BMW.

First car: 1995 Honda Accord with 180,000 miles.
Oil: Valvoline Maxlife 10w30 SJ. It was the first HM oil and it worked well.

One day it got low so I topped it off with some Quaker State 10w30 SJ.

Later I used some Pennzoil 10w30 SL because I had some left over after working with some friends cars.

Filter: Fram orange can.

My first vehicle is my 06 Jeep Liberty that I bought back in August of 09. Had 31k miles on it. I switched from regular dino to GC in November. I'm using a Fram Extended Guard XG3600 filter.

Fist car: 68 Ford Ranchero (302). Oil: Enco Plus SAE 30. Ran over 200k miles on it, so old oils (and engines) weren't as bad as people might think. Definitely got 3k oil changes, though, and had a fair amount of deposits when finally torn down after the oil pump quit. Nothing like the buckets of goo a modern "sludger" produces, though.

Bonus points for anyone who remembers when Exxon was Enco in the western US.

Castrol 20w50 or 10w40. Eventually went to Kendall 20w50 and I used that for years.

First car/truck was a 63 Chevy that I purchase with saved up working money my own at age of 15 with a blown motor. Was a hotrod original was straight 6, but previous owner already put a 350 V-8 in it with a full race cam. I had engine rebuilt, picked up a set of high performance 305 heads with fresh complete valve job for price of the valve job (around $300) used cam out of old motor, I was a happy 16 year old. It had duelas all the way back 2.5" pipe with a cross over, and chrome tips that came out around 3-4" at the end, tips were about 2' long, and headers, cherry bomb glass packs. It sounded good to say the least, you could hear the valves closing when standing beside the headers.

I used Castrol or Valvoline 20w-50 changed around 3000 miles, took me awhile to get those miles, maybe 3 oil changes a year.

1949 Dodge... in 1965.
I used variously Pennzoil, or Havoline. Straight weights changed with the season.

The latter because my neighbor's dad, who had been an auto mechanic before the war, but who THEN was an electrician at the coal mine, said of the wheel bearing grease, " That smells like that Texaco, that Marfax lubrication." So I thought I should stick with that for awhile.
I miss the sound of the oil spout puncturing the metal can tops.

I used QS 10W30 Super Blend or 10W40 Deluxe in my 1960 chevy in 1979 to about 1986 or so. Then it was Castrol GTX for many years.

97 Cavalier, this past summer. Used Valvoline Maxlife Semi Syn 10W-40 and a purolator Pure one filter.

It was in 1964 for me and mine was white. I loved the old British sports cars of the day, Austin, MG, and Triumph.


I restored Triumphs for around 20 years. Won best in show 2 times at the National Vintage Triumph Register annual show. I used Castrol in the Triumphs.

In 1960 when I first started driving. Dad had a 1953 Chevrolet Bellair. We used Pennzoil in it.
