30w non-detergent, 59 Bug, in 1976. This oil was manufactured by all big oil companies. Then I stared using 10w-30 for my 67 Bug in 1982, year round. I drove the 67 to California during July and August through Las Vegas with a broom handle holding the engine lid open. I also drove it al over Nebraska and Kansas during the winter of 85 without problems. That was a great car.

First car:1978 Chevy Malibu 305 v8. First oil change: I bought a case of Trop Artic 10w-40 in the can (with a rebate) and used a AC Delco PF25 oil filter. I specifically remember the person who I bought it from used an oversized filter and I drained the blackest oil (Mobil 1 according to his claim) that I have come across.

Used Quaker State straight 30 because that was what dad had in the garage. Would punch a triangular hole in the top with a can opener to pour from, plus a smaller hole across the top (other side) to let air in.

First was my 1991 Toyota 4x4 that I got new with my own money at 16. It got dino 10w30 that dad always on hand for years. Every 3k. Halvoline, penzoil, mobil, thats what I remember. He brought fram filters. I wasnt allowed to change oil without supervision until after probably the first 5 on my truck. Then after that I got to do all the cars, fun.

1963 Beetle probably Havoline 30W. This was in 1965. YES I'm as old as dirt itself.....

Whatever brand of SAE 30 HD and filter was handy from dad's stash in the garage. Dad would take me with him when buying motor oil on sale when there was a limit on quantity per customer before I started driving, but I was changing oil (around 14 years old on).

55 VW, 30 wt Quaker State from a local dept. store called Boscov's. Super cold winter, and straight 10 spun those VW's great in the winter. Started driving in 1970. I remember when DA Speedsport was king!.
