Post Fram Ultra!

I did couch my words and state jury is still out. For me, the design changes do not exactly inspire confidence. Maybe the changes are fine and allow a lower manufacturing cost to the company AND remain a robust filter. Most often this is not the case.

Not causing alarm, but it got me thinking and I believe we may see more and more of these types of threads. I'd be ecstatic if this is not the case.

So you see a failed cartridge filter and somehow equate that to the whole Fram filter line is bad?

If we see failed new spin-on Utlras in C&Ps, then I'll get "alarmed". And until someone can prove that the new Ultra isn't at 99%+ @ 20u then I'll have to take that it still is based on Fram's claims, which are open to lawsuits by other filter manufactuers to jump on if they can prove it's not what Fram claims.

Well, that's easy enough to check, somebody find a new Ultra cartridge and see if it looks like cellulose from the centre.

I went to Walmart yesterday to get an oil filter and air filter. I ended up with both being Ultra. I was hoping to get the new Ultra oil filter as the box was without metal screen wording. But inside was an Ultra with wire mesh the old kind. Very heavy filter in XG2 size. So that was disappointing but I can live with the old kind for the price. Actually the $8.97 is the best deal on the shelf, because all the ST in the size were gone. No Motorcraft. Fram is going to do well. You get their top consumer filter for less. Date code must be last Sept or so. The box is sealed both ends and not tampered with. So for the old style, get them while they are out there.

The FRAM have a clear nylon mesh backing on the media? I think that's what they used behind the white media. Clearly, that filter hasn't changed yet, at least the one you are looking at

That‘s right - they never used wire mesh like my (older) XG10575 with wide/rounded pleats …

You must be using the XG10575 on the F150 ? Even though they are not wire backed - still a dual layer with very similar numbers - which in the engineering world indicates targeted performance …

What I am missing is the old style with the higher PSI relief for GM …
Have given some to BiL for his F150 - now have 2 each on the shelf. (metal mesh and new style) …
Found a six pack on eBay - but seller noted they were not metal mesh

I posted the failed Fram cartridge, as I stated, the thread got me thinking of the changes made to the new Ultra.

Great filter - I have one, two XG’s, and one M1 that I’d put on an F150 but not my GM …
(they too have the lower rated PRV spring)
Bought all of them knowing they are good filters - then read the TSB and started watching my gauge more …

you must remember on this site Fram can do no good....the bias is heavy on this site....but if you use moly you are OK....

UM... For a very long time the reply to nearly every oil filter thread here was "Fram Ultra".

But Fram has changed owners and some of us are less than impressed with the new owners attempts at gaslighting us...
