Post Fram Ultra!

The old one was a 20k rating as is the new one. I do not go over 10k and most often 8k. While I wouldn't use the Ultra for multiple OCI's that I normally run; I ask why such an emphatic statement? If I were running 5k OCI on either of the vehicles in my Sig, I would go 2 OCI's and not have a worry. To me, all depends upon the situation.
When I pull my vertical positioned filter on my truck I get 1/4 quart of oil plus what's in the filter .
What is the point of not changing a filter anyway ? Vehicles are expensive , filters are not .

What is your OCI? Turning it around a bit I realize, but if your OCI is 5k then it begets the question of why use a filter rated to 20k? Generally, I am with your sentiment but I feel there are parameters that can change the outcome.

In my application, can filter only. Media is the same from a cartridge to a can, no?
You must be using the XG10575 on the F150 ? Even though they are not wire backed - still a dual layer with very similar numbers - which in the engineering world indicates targeted performance …
I currently have both - but no longer willing to cut open new $12 filters …

So far, me neither.

I had a conversation with Fram a few moments ago. The rep indicated the media in the new Ultra can is the same as the media in a new Ultra canister. The pink mentioned previously was explained as a media supplier color not a change in the physical media itself.
You mean cartridge ?

The most important thing an oil filter can do despite what papers you have read is to not fail.

FRAM stopped using the wire mesh/screen behind the filtration media. However the media seem to be the same as is its micron rating and mi/km of use.

I did couch my words and state jury is still out. For me, the design changes do not exactly inspire confidence. Maybe the changes are fine and allow a lower manufacturing cost to the company AND remain a robust filter. Most often this is not the case.

Not causing alarm, but it got me thinking and I believe we may see more and more of these types of threads. I'd be ecstatic if this is not the case.
So how exactly does it not inspire confidence? Are you saying you lack confidence in every other filter that lacks wire backing, too? If so, that's a pretty broad stroke right there.

There is nothing radical or untested about the construction of the new Fram Ultra. The wire/nylon backing's biggest benefit was the way it got up into people's heads. Especially those that don't really appear to understand the need or purpose of it in the first place.

Unless we see them showing an unusually high pattern of failure or problem with filtration, there is zero evidence that the filter is inferior in any way.

I'd take superior filtration ANY DAY over a Napa or Wix filter with wire backing and less efficient filtration (which in many other products is downright disappointing). The whole point of a filter is to filter.

^^^ Gotcha! (y)
It’s just the way it has worked out for me however, I’ve yet to own a vehicle with a cartridge type filter.
I am thinking that the cartridge filters are more consistent between brands because they are wide open for view by us.

Well, that's easy enough to check, somebody find a new Ultra cartridge and see if it looks like cellulose from the centre.

What is this new ultra can you speak of? The media has definitely changed in the last 6 months.

Can you meaning canister vs cartridge?

I’d think they are also more dimensionally critical … CarbonSteel had passed on that he tried a few before settling on the Fram Ultra for the Jeep - I use those 2 x 5k now …
Just went through 4 filters to find something to fit the IS300 - turns out the OEM and Fram were better than the Wix.
BTW - the “orange box” Fram look better than 🍊 can … 😷

The new FRAM Ultra will certainly make it 10,000 miles.
One oil filter per oil change. It makes absolutely no sense to change your oil without changing the filter.
Honda, one of the worlds leading engine manufacturers says otherwise.

I use the new Ultra with confidence.
