Possible Odyssey purchase - 5 speed AT good or bad?

I'm not sure the price range in your area for used Ody's, but here in the PNW, they are terribly high. I bought a NEW 2006 and got a heck of a deal.

Frankly that era of transmission scares me, even with the fix and even with miracle ATF's.

Find http://www.odyclub.com/forums/ This site is superb. I'm oilypablo over there. See how to get the lowest prices, get tips and stuff. GREAT SITE.

Like the brake rotors on a heavier Honda product aren't also worthless? Don't expect over 30k before they begin vibrating.

I work at a Saturn dealer, and we haven't had any failures in the Vue's with the honda engine. But we did just have an Oddysey traded in that had less than 100k miles on it and was on its 3rd transmission among many other things. We had the full service history. Unfortunately I don't know what year it was.

My sister inlaw just got a new 06' Odyssey last week. I drove it for an hour and I must say its one of the nicest driving cars that I've ever driven. Smooth, quiet and has a decent amount of passing power on the highway.

It does not feel like you are driving a van.

Watch the brakes........wholly inadequate.

Honda didn't win van of the year for so many years for nothing.....

Well I own and find the brakes adequate.I've never problems with them and still am on the original pads(currently at 39K).

Never a problem out of that van

Alan - Allow me to elaborate on the Toyota Sienna braking comment.

I test drove 4 different 2006 Sienna's at 4 different dealers. One had over 200 miles on it, the others from 5-100 miles. Part of my evaluation of cars are my braking, braking hard, and braking while doing an evasive maneuver. The Sienna simply did not respond to braking and when quick stops were required the pedal took a HUGE leg pressure and the van keep rolling. It scared my wife!!!! Simply put, I know we are talking mini-vans, not sports cars, but the Odyssey had much better brake performance.

Anyone have a Car and Driver or other braking comparo on vans?

I have a 2002 Odyssey and that 5 spd auto trans give me the creeps. It delays shifting from park to drive for 1 1/2 seconds. The fluid gets very dark even if I change it every 10,000 miles. I got the oil jet repair but that really is not the way they fail. It's the third gear clutch pack and some other things. When I talk to soccer families at games some do admit their transmission was replaced in their Odyssey. My friend's Odyssey and another with and Acura TL had their transmission go bad also. The Odyssey owner had to pay for the repair. No, the 2002 did not get a warranty extension. When used car buyers find out about this problem, used car resale value will fall.

It's been kept quiet because nobody wants to lose their precious "Honda resale value"

Never seen a mag comparison between the 2 nor would I care to see one from the BMW and Honda slaves at C&D.

I got a 2002 that has drums in the rear and it's really fine.

You guys will get not argument from me on the crappy Honda AT's. We are talking Honda design issues, plain and simple. I have my fingers crossed that 2006 has the problem fixed, but even if they do, it will effect the resale! I tend to keep vehicles for a LONG time.

As I side note - I believe one of the AT issues is simply related to lack of ATF volume. This I can remedy.

Should they farm these AT's out to AW?

Hi all. We have decided to go ahead with an Odyssey purchase, transmission be ****ed

I will however add a good-sized transmission cooler and a Magnefine filter to the car, followed by a transmission flush probably using the Z1 version of Autoglide.

I've cross-shopped with a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country (nice ride, crappy, awful, uncomfortable seats) and a Mazda MPV (poor handling, sluggish transmission, otherwise nice) and the Odyssey wins out.

I'm looking at a pair of used 2002 ones locally that have the 100k transferrable factory warranty, one only has 12k on its new transmission (85k total on the car). The other has no trans. trouble to date.
