Since people rave about chevy cruise on BITOG, I rented one recently. I was mostly impressed with the car until I fueled it up. Less than 30MPG in hwy driving? Gimme a brake!
This was 2013 base version with 1.8L I4 and 6-speed AT. Hwy speeds 75-80 MPH with some small sections of 60-70 MPH. Mild weather with no cabin heating or cooling needed. Yes, I had it in D all the time, meaning it was in 6th gear with near 2500 RPM IIRC.

One more thing, the GM's implementation of EPS was not the greatest either. The car is very quiet though.

You said "rented"... Often, they're a gallon or two shy of being full when you pick them up...so, the calculated MPG are way off...

Further, the MPG is going to go way, way down at 75-80MPH. I would expect about a 25% reduction...which is in line with your experience.

Looks to me like the Cruze performed as advertised...if you want to get EPA MPG, try setting the cruise control at 55 MPH...

Just curious - what sort of mpg were you expecting at 80 mph?

If I remember correctly, it's the 1.4 turbo version that gets better mpg.

I test drove the Cruze before I bought the Dart.
24-hour test drive btw
Glad I did. The avg mpg was 28-30mpgs on the Cruze,
Dart has seen top 30s in the 38-43mpg range, both calculated and on the console odometer

Bad handling on that car, numb steering and terminal oversteer - Oddly I like the "carness" of the Cobalt better.

Of florida rentals Ive had visiting my Mother in Ft Myers, The last gen Kia Forte is the best driver in the compact segment.

I loved and missed the Grand Marquis and the 3800 Buick LeSabres though. @ great cars refined over many years of production. They get 'em perfect then kill them.. Big Mistake.

I've heard the criticism about the 1.8 before regarding gas mileage, particularly in the AT. I can't speak from experience as we have the 1.8 with an MT.

As QP mentioned, the 1.4 turbo is the better performer for gas mileage, with the advantage going to the 1.4 Eco with MT which is a a couple hundred pounds lighter than other variations IIRC. I know a few on here have the 1.4 and 1.8 with AT, it would be interesting to know what their comparison average.

I can tell you the 1.8 MT we have is lifetime (20,000 miles) about 36.5 MPG. I'll be interested if we can break 40 mpg tanks this summer now that we are a bit more used to the car.

We're very happy with the Cruze but I'll add, I test drove the 1.8 with AT and the 1.4 with AT a month ago and I certainly would move onto something else before the 1.8 in AT. Other models have different results.

Please reread my post. I was driving mostly 75-80, meaning up to 80, with very little time at 80 (passing, etc).

My RIP 10 year old Corolla with (gasp!) 4-speed AT would net 32 MPG and I get low 40's in Prius at the very same speeds.

the base version gets the worst fuel mileage.

the 2010 accent gets about the same.. talk about a rip.
for a tiny car it gets terrible gas mileage.

The last person could have filled it with E85 before returning it as well.

That's one of the reasons why I will always happily take an Impala at the rental desk, I can fill it with E85 before returning it.

I rent them all the time. Only the "eco" version gets stellar MPG's.

Otherwise, the real world MPG's are well within the norm for Corrolla, Civic and Focus class cars. Which, by the way, achieve a solid 26MPG with me at the tiller... in normal conditions. And will achieve 30 only on extended highway trips with cruise set.

Well here in the real world, my cruze has 57000 miles on it and I've averaged 40 plus on summer formulation gas and 35 on winter formulation. It is a 2012 lt manual not an eco. Had one of the new ford focus for seven months and put 14000 miles on that and never hit the advertised sticker fuel mileage. I've heard so much [censored] about the cruze doesn't get good fuel mileage that it makes me wonder how people drive? Went to the shore two falls ago and got almost 44 for the trip. Yes, I record the mileage and divide by the gallons on fill up every time. For mileage and crusing the highway this is the best car I ever had. PS I do not drive my vehicles easy either, but by the same token I don't beat them......

Normally it is the driver that has the biggest impact on fuel economy.

A buddy and I took a Gen2 Prius 1/2 across the country. He drove most of the way out and complained how it only got 37mpg for him. When I drove back, I had it at 56mpg.

Yeah, he was a guy who would go 60-80-60-80-60-80mpg, do brake checks without reason, and throttle it at every chance.

Wow

I get that in my charger, with a hemi.

The key to gas mileage is tire inflation.

What the max tire pressure on the tire sidewall on the Cruze, and what model do you have?

I know the Eco Cruze uses a low rolling resistance tire, and I think its 10 mm skinnier than the regular model too...
