Interesting. I didnt know they exist.
Me? IT would bother me if I could still see through it. Also trust that it was always working.
I would go with typical Merv 8 filters and change every 3 months, if they come out clean push it to 4.
I have only seen one "rock catcher" fiberglass filter I liked, used by a home builder. I forgot the brand, I think it was actually branded by the equipment maker (maybe trade or Lennox). It was a true one inch thick filter. The ones in the home improvement stores are very thin. I dare say it may have had a Merv rating on it of 4 or 5 with was unsual.
For almost two decades now I have tried all sorts filters, first 15 years in our much larger home that we sold recently. Everything from 1 inch to Honeywell (and knock offs) 4 and 5 inch thick. The thick ones I would replace every 6 months, maybe at one time every year.
Both homes have two intakes and they go behind the air intake grills. Not at the unit.
Anyway, the cost of the thick filters was getting crazy and I rather replace the one inch every 3 months for less money. Im sure I could go to 4 months. Our new home has two - 14x14xx1 and 25X14X1 Plus one 6 x 6 fresh air intake.
I posted them in here recently. They were well made and bought on Amazon. MOAJ was the brand and now looking them up on Amazon I see they changed the product on me to a higher Merv in my size so I will not re-order. I dont want anything higher than Merv 8 They seem to be changing up their product line. Common with aftermarket brands and why I have used so many different brands.
I almost wish my filter was at the air handler instead of the two air intakes. Then again, getting up into my attic would make that a chore with our new home of 3 years. Since it is at the air handler, cant you use 3inch plus size filters?
If not I would go with what I posted, one inch, change every 3 months. Merv 8
Photos of the actual filters I just change out are the link below. I liked these filters because there was cross bracing on both sides of the filters, well made. But looks like I will go searching again if I cant find my exact size with them in Merv 8
Just changed my filters, typically every three months but went a few weeks into the 4th month by mistake. I used to buy the DEEP 4inch grill filters in our last home and change every 6 months to 1 year, but at the cost it was better buying the 1inch and doing it every three months.
14x14x1 and 25x14x1 I always try not to get anything higher than Merv 8 but sometimes for the smaller 14x14 I will get a Merv 11, not always by choice.
PLUS the system has a 6x6 inch filter INSIDE the air box of the 25x14 filter. The system when it turns on has a solenoid that opens a a flap that draws in...
