I am not trying to start a war. And, I am a user of AutoRX - I like the product. However, the manufacturer and several users here highly recommend avoidance of PAO- and ester-based oils during the whole application process and especially during the rinse cycle.

I accept that mineral-based oils may work better than Group IV/V during an AutoRX clean cycle. However, the explanation is never satisfactory. Usually, the explanation involves a reference to solvent polarity and that answer is the source of my confusion.

Esters are among the most polar of the base oils and PAOs are among the least polar. Just because an oil contains PAO and esters does not mean that final product has to be more or less polar than a GII/GIII-based oil.

If PAO and esters are incompatible with AutoRX, can anyone tell me why? Is there a different answer for each base oil? Since they are on opposite ends of the polarity spectrum, it is difficult form me to accept that they are both too polar.
 
It may be a blanket statement so they dont have figure out which synthetics are PAO, Ester, etc and also because a PAO base isnt 100% PAO and may contain esters, etc.

Exactly. I think this is the likely explanation.
 
For lack of an education in chemistry ...

PAO is nonpolar. They're PAO/diester blends for solubility. While not necessarily in conflict with the three esters that make up Auto-Rx, it will alter its time base of effectiveness. Couple that with time mileage restraints (balanced for customer tolerance) and sensible lengths of time/mileage for engines you don't have a clue to what condition that they're in, makes the KISS method the most productive.
 
Well put Gary. All PAO oils utilize esters in order to successfully couple additive packages into the PAO base. However in an ideal ARX cleaning environment the cleaning esters of ARX work best if they are the only or at least greatest polar ingredients being attracted to the metal surfaces in need of cleansing.
 
OK, but, if the issue is that some esters would displace AutoRX at the metal surface, then wouldn't those ester be "cleaning" the metal better than AutoRX. I don't see how something in the oil could be more attracted to metal than AutoRX and yet prevent the metal from being cleaned.

On the other hand, I can see how polar molecules could be attracted to each other more than the metal surface and therefore prevent either ester from being as useful as they would have been if used alone. But, this explanation is not compatible with idea that some esters bind metal better than AutoRX and prevent it from working.

In any case, I am sure that I am still left wanting with the circulating explanations as to why AutoRX should not be used with Group IV/V oils.

In addition, with each improvement in hydrocracking, the base oils are getting less polar and therefore are needing more modification to keep additives in solution. Is there a general assumption that Group III base oils are not being doped with polar compounds currently?

Again, qualifying myself as a dunce in the realm of any real chemistry, that's not how I understand it. It would be Auto-Rx having to compete with the weaker, but still present, resident component. I envision it like a static charge ..where the rubbed balloon has to displace the like charged particles to stick to the wall, while if those like particles were not there, the bond would be easier to achieve (bear with me here).

Again, you're "packaging" this for broad based consumer use and you're going to configure it for the maximum performance over the specified duration of use.

Better ..unlikely. They probably would reduce deposit formation. Protract ..elongate the formation process. We've seen transitional consumption from switching from PAOs to Group III ..from Group III's to PAO/POE and the like. This is probably (my speculation- but it reasons well) disruptions in the ring area. In my personal experience I went from 22k (10k/12k+) on Delvac 1, about the best PAO based HDEO in the world, with zero consumption ..then switched to RTS and consumed 1 quart @ 3k (changed-freaked) 6k (changed- less freaked) and at 9k (finally relaxed).

OVERKILL switched to Mobil 1 0w-20 (iirc) and found the grit in his filter not atypical with an Auto-Rx treatment.

These (again, my opinion) are disruptions to resident formations and occur due to changes in chemistry. This doesn't necessarily mean that they don't eventually form their own resident deposits over time ..especially in the ring area.

Although not being a direct comparison, I'd look at Auto-Rx as not unlike a brine soak regeneration on a resin bed in a softener except that you can still use it in process. The sodium (again, not a direct comparison since sodium is weaker than the calcium/magnesium bond) "gang tackles" the resident attaching components and kicks them off.

How long will the presence of esters protract the treatment length? How long does the average Auto-Rx customer want to wait? How long is "long enough" when using oils of various ester components? Would you want a customer using Auto-Rx over an extended drain (treatment, not maintenance) while not knowing the state of deposits in it? Would a person want to buy Auto-Rx if it meant ditching $8-$10/quart oil (just assuming that it's a DIY - let alone the customers who cannot change their own oil) in 2500-3000 miles?

I've talked with Frank many times over the past couple of years after he was kind enough to cooperate in my experiment with Auto-Rx. The biggest challenge that he encounters is all the "exceptions". Some want it over with in 5 minutes ..others don't want to keep track of the miles ..others don't want to do too many oil changes in xxx miles. The list is endless.

As I said, Frank could construct a virtual "Chinese Menu" and really get things complicated. IF you use a PAO/Ester based oil (one from column A) ..liability "I use Mobil 1 10w30, is that a PAO?" or "What's a PAO and how would I know?" ..and even if you asked the service center, does the guy they ask know if the oil they're putting in is a PAO or ester containing oil?? When I start slinging around PAO/POE/whatever at any of my wrench friend's shops ..I'm looking at a deer in the headlights. These span everything from reputable engine builders that attend Indy engine builder clinics ..to leading edge consumer evolution service shops (all the All Data software ..the works).

You're looking at this from someone who has more than a casual knowledge of lubrication and you're not factoring that knowledge in terms of bringing a product to market over a broader customer base.

So, it's not like your questions are out of line or anything, but multiply them by thousands and route that through a (mostly) one man show and you'll get an inkling about how it is way simpler to employ the KISS method to the process instead of configuring an infinite number custom recommendations for each and every customer..each one needing a mini-education while you're there.


You're asking for refined qualifications from the man with multiple spinning plates on the stage.

Disclaimer: Frank and I are friends. This was a friendship that formed from him responding to my experiments with Auto-Rx. He cut me a deal just to see what happened. I approached him and asked what he thought about it. It piqued his interest. Later he donated product for further experiments on vehicles of others. This is not unlike the relationship that I have with Bruce with my 0w-10 experiments with the exception that I'm not dealing with anything Bruce produces as a core product. This is the kind of stuff I do all the time as time permits. I'm only one man with limited resources ..so the "help", so to speak (this is in both avoided costs and the willingness of some to try out some of my ideas - Fueltankerman Dan for one) is always appreciated. In the process we've formed a decent relationship that also includes my input on how to cope with certain challenges that he encounters and lots of stuff that has nothing to do with Auto-Rx.

I can't find anything suspicious or unethical in that relationship. If anyone can produce a covert secret agenda in what I've just said, please point it out. I've had excellent results from using the product and have some knowledge about it (some qualified ..some not).

How about my opinion on PureOne filters? Delvac 1 oil? Which products or items am I supposed to "omit" from my discussions, even if I've got my own interests to promote?
 
I can easily relate to the simple instructions concept. I am not knocking the instructions or the product. I use AutoRX and even give it as Christmas gifts. I have no problems with AutoRX, instructions, customer relations, or marketing.

I'm just trying to understand why Esters are a problem. I liked you ion exchange resin analogy, but if the metal is the resin, then it doesn't matter which ion binds to the resin, the resin won't have algae growing on it in either case. If you consider the calcium as the gunk, and sodium as an ester, then you can easily add potassium instead of sodium and drive off the calcium just as well. The sodium and potassium both "swarm" the resin and drive off the calcium. They don't interfere with each other.

My only issue is that I know that I don't understand the mechanism behind why AutoRX doesn't work with esters present. Perhaps no one really knows, or perhaps the answers are designed to maintain a trade secret.
 
I think that main problem with the esters comes during the rinse cycle. Esters will conceivably hinder the release of contamination (that has been loosened and somewhat dissolved by ARX) from metal surfaces. A "simple" or conventional oil will supposedly allow the deposits to release from the metal surfaces better by having less natural polarity. Not sure how all that would sound in more scientific terms, but that is how I understand the reason for using non-ester, especially during the rinse cycle.

Of course if an oil is known to be a PAO base, then it likely contains some ester as well for the seals and additive solvency, so that is a good reason to not use a PAO oil, at least during the rinse phase.

The only reason I can see for using non-ester oil during the clean phase is that the ARX cleaning ester may compete with the base oil esters for contact with metal and polar deposits that need dissolved/cleaned by the ARX. I think that if an ester oil is used during the clean cycle, it would make sense to run it at least twice as long than the instructions recommend.
 
if you do a search, esters, PAO, POE all bad for clean or rinse cycles. conventional conventional conventional he only says syn is ok for the turbo crowd and probably so he doesn't get blamed for anything going wrong, like someone overheating and abusing a conventional oil and shearing it down to a 20 or something
 
Regarding polarity, does all synthetic oil swing one way, while all conventional oil swings the other way? What about a bipolar product?

Group III oils are prefered for those that insist on synthetic oils for their motors. Group III essencially being a cleaned up or better refined conventional oil. But over the 3000 mile ARX intervals, either cleaning or rinse conventional or a group III is not a big issue.
 
I think BMWTECHGUY and Gary Allan stated it well.

In the matter of instructions for use, one has to be consistent and have as few exceptions as possible in its use.

Chemically speaking, I think what they don't want is other esters interferring with the ester mix in ARX. In other words it's like a firemen at a fire, "you onlookers get out of the way and let us do our jobs."

You have to remember, as others have said, that ther are components in a synthetc oi that are polar and may interfere with the ARX esters. For example, in Mobil 1, they use Alkylated Naphthalenes, along with a small amout of ester, as "polar solvents," in addition to PAO. In Redline, the POE's would interfere as well. Same way with Amsoil and other full synthetics.

If the base oil contained only PAO, then there wouldn't be a problem, but as stated above, there are no PAO only PCMOs or HDEOs.

The only pure PAO base oil I am aware of is heat transfer fluid, but you cannot use that for lubricating engines or transmissions.

So follow directions and use a GroupI,II, or III oil for the ARX Cleaning/Rinsing regimen.
 
Wouldn't there be the same problems with A-Rx as a main't dose with a good synthetic oil?

I would hazard a guess that the efficacy is reduced as a maintenance dose with a good synthetic oil, but that this is offset by the complementary effect of fewer products produced by the synthetic oil that ARX combats.
 
I'm trying to figure out if it is worth using it as a maint dose with a good synthetic or not? If they suggest not using a synthetic other than a Group III, then I can't see how it will work as a maint item with a true full synthetic oil. Seems contradictory to me. Am I missing something?

I couldn't tell you definitively, but notice I suspect the efficacy is reduced not eliminated. So without proof I think there is still some benefit. The question has been brought up numerous times, with all the same protractors and detractors, and I think it also comes down to a case of exactly which really good synthetic oil is in the equation, as amount of the polar components can vary greatly from brand to brand and product to product.

I am currently running a maintenance dose with a fill of the Penn. Platinum, in an older Honda whose engine has been getting significantly cleaner with each oil change from when I first acquired it and it was fairly dirty. But as a primarily GIII and unknown ester content oil I guess not really pertinent.
 
I see your point. I would think since PP is a Group III oil you'd reap the benefits. Someone using AMSOIL Signature Series or a Red Line oil might be wasting money? This isn't about bashing the product, I have some friends who used A-rX and are very pleased with it. But if it won't work with one of the so called "better" synthetics I don't see a purpose using it as a maint dose add in? Maybe a switch to a conventional oil for a clean and rinse every 30,000-50,000 miles might be a better option for them?

Economically I would agree with you, the premium cost of the premium oil coupled with the reduced performance of the additive due to the other additional components in the premium oil at least partly there to do the same thing and if running the premium oil 100% of the time would make the addition of the additive economically insensible to me.
