Please explain the E-core hate

I've used e-cores quite a few times and didn't have a problem. I wouldn't worry about it. It might not be my very first choice, but I'd use them again.

I've been using e-cores for several years in several different applications without issue. Where I buy my filters I can get every one I need, one stop shopping.

Come on guys, its just an oil filter. All of the cars I service (5)have 5,000 mi OCI, I really don't see the issue.

My Powerstroke gets Racor all of the way around and the other industrial engines get Fleetguard or Racor.

Do you cut them all open for inspection?

Quite honestly, no I have not.

But again its just an oil filter, there are literally millions of cars currently using e-cores and frams for that matter without issue. For extended drain intervals I would think it to be prudent to use a "top shelf" filter, but for manufacturer intervals, my case is 5,000 mi. I really don't see an issue with an e-core.

They are an excellent 5k filter, plain and simple.

You seem to forget the huge problem that still exists with lack of sufficient bonding of the end caps. It's not the plastic we complain about, it is the fact that the filter element blows out/tears.

If you don't cut them open you would never know if they are failing inside. There could be media tears or de-bonded end caps ... you would never know by the way your car is running. These kind of failures are not going to destroy your engine instantly, but if unfiltered oil is always going by the filter media, then what's the use of even running a filter?

I USED to cut open filters. For years now, all of my oil and filters have come from Walmart. I've cut open dozens of ST and Frams (all types). I have a 5 gal. bucket in my garage full of filter 'guts'. You know what I found..? Nothing wrong at all! They all worked as advertised. I can post pics if you'd like, but I don't see the point.

Right now one of my 6 month OCI cars has a orange Fram and the other a ST. I've seen enough with MY OWN two eyes, that I'm not worried about them. If using a "better" filter helps you sleep at night... great. Personally, I have better things to worry about.

I'm glad my car uses a cartridge filter. As long as I continue to buy the ACDelco filter from the GM Dealership, I get a high quality, Hengst-made filter.

You should cut open more Super Tech filters... because this is what I found on my first one:

I don't hate on E-Cores or their use. I used to use them because Champion has (had?) a good reputation on this board. These are just two data points out of thousands of filters that have had no issues. I just prefer not to use them anymore.

I stopped using them because I found this:

ST3614006.jpg

ST3614026.jpg

This is an ST3614 that was taken off a '98 LS400 after being in service for 6k miles.

ST3980008_a.jpg

ST3980014.jpg

This is an ST3980 (PF52 equivalent) that was taken off a '92 Lumina. This is a molding defect that escaped the factory. I assume it's an escape because I have no idea what Champion's acceptance criteria is regarding these molded cages. Maybe a short shot mold in this area is acceptable (??)

Well I had a hard time finding pics like those till I started this thread. Thanks all for the great input. I took the STP e-core back to AutoZone today and they refunded it no problem. Got an on-line deal on PureOnes instead for $3.07 a piece so I got 8 and they were less per each than the STP e-core.

I'll also post this for posterity...I was in Walmart also and looked at the exact same Champ Labs e-core except in the Supertech version. It was obvious to me the Supertech had far fewer pleats and the media didn't appear to nearly as densely packeds a the STP was, not a good thing on an e-core IMO. Champ Labs may be cutting even more corners on the Super Tech filters. Ouch!

I use the John Deere version of the e-core design, haven't yet seen an issue worth commenting on.
I am aware that there are better filters available, but for me I can get everything I need in one stop.

Many cartridge filters get inserted over top a nice thing called a permanent solid center tube that's part of the filter housing on the car.... I know that's how my toyota works. So your reason = fail
