Please comment on my report...new engine

This is off my wife's 2011 GMC Terrain. Its new, but these engines have had issues with their high pressure Fuel pump for the direct injection. What do you think? I'm new to this oil analysis stuff

The wear is not too bad for a new engine. The fuel is really high though. I would use the thickest oil I could that met factory specs.
 
Yup, 5W30 and of course....DEXOS approved.
Now running 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum.

Blackstone said that the oil was diluted to the point of about a 5W20 now. Could you imagine what it would be like if I went by the oil life monitor!!!!!

Fine for break-in period.

I figure there must have been lots of short trips in cold weather. A long trip every once in a while will burn off the fuel and any moisture in the oil. Make sure you take a nice long trip, 100 km or more, just before you sample next time.

Your UOA will continue to have highish iron and copper until the break in is complete at approximately 20,000 km.

I mean kinematic viscosity, not grade. 5w30s come in lots of different viscosity levels, anywhere from 9.3 to 12.4 cSt.

Typical for API SM and SN oils and I guess now Dexos too, it's low to protect the catalytic converter.

I understand. With my flippant reply of "5W30" I was pointing out (not very clearly
blush.gif
) how limited, re the choice of oil i.e. grade, one has for a GM engine.

But back to your comment....it would be so helpful if we had a database for oils showing such info as kinematic viscosity (better still HTHS) (among other properties).

I guess I'll try doing the next sample after driving it on a longer trip. My wife does drive 15km to work everyday at 100km/h. Weather has been around -5 degrees C at night and +5 or 10 Degrees C during the days. We've only had the car for a month now.
Starting to think that some gas in the oil is just going to be normal due to the engine being Direct injection. Maybe that's why GM wants DEXOS only so you have a higher grade( semi syn or better) to help the fuel in the oil. Still like blackstone said 4.3% is in the cautionary range.

If you compare this to early OCIs/UOAs of the GM 3.6L DI engine your wear #s are much much better.

The hope was that the dexos certification would address the unique conditions of GM's DI engines but the dexos certified M1 5W30 has as a rule not produced good UOA #s and other oils have done better.
 
Doesn't look good to me. Only 1350 miles, and the oil has sheared massively.

Are you getting the expected fuel mileage?
How long did you drive (time) before taking your oil sample?
Did you change the oil?

I'm in the Toronto area and have found with my 3.6DI and face similar findings with fuel ranging 2.4 ~ 4.0%, I do short trips and only stretch the legs on the highway once a week.

A 'thicker' 5w30 may be of some benefit in combating fuel dilution. Managing the mix of city/hwy driving may also assist somewhat.

Thats too much gas in the engine even for break in. Return it. If you are having problems now imagine the problems in 10k miles or longer.
