I like this UOA with Mobil Delvac 1 5w40!

Planning for a road trip this summer... need some advice

I also have a '95 GC 4.0. As for the tires, i was told not to go up in size because of the transmission having weird shift points with the taller tire. I like the BFG AT, but they do not come in 225's. Let me know how you like the 30's. As for oil, i use Mobil 1 10w30 in summer, but for a raod trip i think you would be better with the 5w-40 over the 0w-40. I would feel beeter myself knowing i have the 5w vs the 0w when you are climing mountains ect.
I will probably buy 5w40 this week. Currently, my 28.6 inch tires (at new levels... now i'm at 6/32) are throwing my transmission off because it is shifting very very weird. P225s, IMHO, are very very small. I am at 235/75R15, just like the upcountry package. The 235 in ATs are usually 29 inches tall. The BFG ATKO 30x9.5x15 are actually 29.6 inches. 96-98 GCs with upcountry were equipped with 245/70R16 tires.. BFGs in that size say they are 29.6 inches tall. I will probably switch to a 16 inch rim so the ZJ looks a little newer. The Sawblade rims are getting a little old. Thanks for the help!
Change the oil before you leave and stick with 5w40 M1. Make sure you bring an extra quart or 2 with you. Your trip will be a peice of cake compared to my 5000 mile journey last May. We went to Vegas, Grand Canyon and then south through Phoenix, Tucson. There was 5 of us in my 4-Runner plus 400 lbs. of luggage.
If you are not 100% set on the tires I would get the Bridgestone Duelers.

WOW! That's a long trip! Our SUVs have just about the same amount of mileage. It will just be use 4 and our luggage. One of the passengers will my a girl... hopefully she won't pack very much. I might change my oil to Mobil Clean 5000 in the mean time so I can save my stash of 5w40 that I will buy for trips and college stuff. On the tire matter... I'm 90% sold on the BFGs and if I don't get the BFGs, I'll go for Cooper's new ATR.quote:

Well, Mobil 1 0w40 has served me quite well. I am going to dump it next week. I have put 5100 miles on it and it is my first run. I put on 90% highway miles, 10% short city. Well, I am taking a road trip in my 1995 Grand Cherokee this summer. Three friends and I will be driving to Seattle, Washington. Its about 2500 miles. Over 5000 miles round trip. My Jeep was voted over an 02 Taurus (due to lack of cruise control) and 02 Volvo S60 (due to lack of rear passenger leg room). I have no doubts that it will get there. I will be using FP for the road trip. I will be putting new tires (BFG A/T KOs... heavier than the Geolandar HTS i have right now so i'll suffer a little in gas mileage but it will be a 30inch tire over a 28.5 inch tire). OK. so OIL....
I have about 2400 miles left on the 7.5K oil change interval of the Mobil 1 0w40 (which UOA says is pretty good in terms of wear) but I am going to change it because it is the first run on Mobil 1. For this road trip, I will probably still have the Mobil 1 still in the oil pan by the time July comes around. Now, if say, I have 3000 miles on Mobil 1, would I be pushing it if I ran it for the 5000 miles road trip without having to change it? To ensure less miles on the second batch of Mobil 1 in my Jeep, would I be safe to change it next month, after the semester is over? I have to go home to change it and by then, I would have put on another 1200 miles on the Jeep. Opinions?

I too would just stick with the 5w40 Mobil 1 Truck and SUV or maybe go a little cheaper and run Rotella T Syn 5w40 and change it out after the trip.
As for the BFG AT's, they are a great tire. They are quiet on the road and have just enough balls for light offroad duty (anything except mud) I am running the 31 inch variety on my TJ and my XJ as well. Both sets have over 14k on them and are wearing very well. I expect to get 50-60k out of them.
