This came off my '07 Chrysler Town & Country. It was ran for about 3,100 miles, with Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20. Current fill is Chevron Supreme 5w30 with a Mopar MO-090 (Premium Plus) filter.

This is pretty much exactly like the PL14476 that came off my Corolla last time. The only real difference is this larger filter has the assembly string around the filter media that the smaller PL14476 did not.

And I realized today that I may be confusing something. I thought the metal "leaf spring" on the bottom was part of the bypass system on this filter. It doesn't appear that that is the case. It appears that the bypass valve is actually at the back of the filter cartridge, with a small "flat coiled" spring on the end of it. It doesn't appear that the leaf spring is part of the bypass system...it appears that the leaf spring only keeps the filter cartridge pressed up against the front plate...is that true?

Either way, the media looks great, as expected. Because of the cost and the short OCIs, I believe I'll start using the Mopar MO-090 from now on. It's a few bucks cheaper, still a good Purolator design, and has a front-side bypass valve which, from what I've read, has more advantages than disadvantages.

Thoughts?

I am at my girlfriends house and dont have my pics to referrence, but if you go to my post about my 14477 is the 5th and 6th picture what you are referring to?

How long timewise was that filter in use?

I didnt think about wiping down the parts before the pictures were taken. Looks much nicer the way you did it.

I plan on cutting open my Mobil 1 filter in about 6 months to see how it looks.

Yes, the bypass valve on Purolators is the flat spring with a disk that covers a hole on the bottom end cap. All the leaf spring does is hold everything tightly together in the can.

To tell you the truth, I really don't like the design. Try pushing on it! It takes a ton of effort - more then any coil spring type bypass like Champion or Fram. If you push hard enough to get it to open, the disk won't fully return flush agaisnt the end cap.

Works fine for me. You are doing it wrong.

Yes, that's it. 02zx9r, yes, just like in your photos.

I was looking at the leaf spring itself. When you press down on it, it didn't return back, and I thought "well that's kinda cheap". But I was pushing the wrong thing. I just went out and tried the actual bypass valve, and it was fairly easy to push in, and it sprung back out pretty well also. How well it actually seals, I'm not sure, I couldn't see it that well. But from what I can tell, it did fully retract.

Now I'm excited to cut open the Mopar MO-090 that's on the van now. It's also a Purolator, but apparently made to Mopar's spec, which is slightly different from the main-market Premium Plus that Purolator markets. The MO-090 has the front-side coil sprung bypass valve.

On all the Purolators I've cut open for my Corolla, you have to push so hard on the disk to make it open that it distorts the "spring" and it won't return! Maybe the bypass setting is higher for my car.

Odd, what's it supposed to be? Mine have been for a Ford 302 and Ford 4.6/5.4L. I've posted pictures of the actuation of the valve in the past. I can re-post them for reference if desired.

Actual deflection on the valve is not huge. It does not take substantial pressure to open it. It readily sprung back after pressure was removed.

It looks like it's barely used. the medium seems to have a tiny bit of black discoloration. i would say you could change the filter every other time, at least.
