I bought a Superships Flashpaq for my Jeep this past fall and had pinging real bad on the 87 tune, no matter what brand or octane gas I ran in it. I talked to someone there and apparently there have been several complaints of this on the newer Jeep Wranglers, so they had come up with a new tune to fix it. Well, mine still pings with the new tune but if I return it back to stock, there is no pinging, so its definately related to the programmer. I have always run Chevron or Gumout w/Regane fuel system cleaner in it before each oil change to keep it cleaned out and it gets run on the highway every weekend, so I don't think carbon build up would be a problem. The pinging has always seemed worse when my coolant temp was above 195, so thinking its heat related, I changed spark plugs this weekend and went one heat range colder, my thinking being the advanced timing the programmer is creating is also creating higher combustion chamber temps.. Well, this helped tremendously, but I still have a little bit of pinging under light to medium load at certain rpm points. Would it be safe to go down another heat range? I have no fouling on the new plugs, so I'm thinking this would be safe, but it also seems awfully extreme to me for just a programmer and a drop in AFE air filter. Superchips has told me that theyve found its mostly a state related issue... any state that has california emissions seems to have the pinging problem, PA where I live, being one of them. So do I go down another heat range or just suck it up and run higher octane with the 87 tune? Stock, the jeeps come with a Champion Double Platinum 7570 and I changed to a 7032 which seems to be used mainly in the chrysler 2.7 v6's.
