Pigeons and solar panels- waiting for the invoice

Some random evenings, I hear pigeons cooing outside. Fortunately, they move quite frequently. If they don't, I'm ready to shoo them away. My yard is a no-nest zone.

Costco is pretty smart about pigeon abatement. They have coverings and spiky things in the food court roof. The old Costco had neither. They learned their lesson.

Looks like a real pain. How many hours?

Wife paid the pigeon exterminators to put up the screen. I suspect someone who has the screen and rivets can do the screen install in a hour.

Of course, after sun rise, every hour the screen install becomes tougher and the temperature rising.

These are pictures of the screens installed on our solar panels..doesn't look like rocket science or costly materials.

Yeah but it made the initial installation all the cheaper, and it saved you money at the time. It's just like when automakers save you money by leaving off the dipstick(s), removing knobs and buttons (use the touchscreen instead), leaving out sound deadener, the list goes on how they can save you money...

That's like saying a auto manufacturer should fill the oil on a new vehicle purchase up to the minimum fill line, not that maximum fill line, to save a quart of oil on every vehicle sold. The new car purchaseer can buy a quart to get to the maximum fill line on a new vehicle purchase.

The cost to do the pigeon prevention screening during installation of solar panels is under $20 USD in materials, and labor is just as cheap as one is already on the roof.

Residential solar business is simply a dirty business sold by dirty people working for dirty organizations.

If the installer and selling organization is to cheap to spend $20 in materials to prevent pigeon damage, one can only imagine the poor workmanship and mounting materials used to install and secure the panels.

If automakers didn't have problems with oil consumption, I'd bet they'd have gone down the path of shorting people a quart. Anything to save a buck--many of us in the rustbelt lament the shortcuts taken (lack of anti-seize on bolts, rust resistant metal, etc).

But overall, post was meant to be tongue in cheek. They save us a buck upfront but then we spend ten later. Not actually a cost savings. People often fixate on upfront cost and will fail to realize what a few extra dollars will save. [Then again, many have been swindled by various upcharges, like at a dealership. So this door swings both ways.] Some companies don't care, don't plan to be around long term, and thus feel no problem doing this. Bare minimum for a quick sale and off they go to the next job.

Our home was built in 2019. Solar panels installed in 2022. Roof is a hip roof in the desert southwest. Wife notices/ hears pigeons on the roof non-stop. I am not home to look into my Wife's pigeon concern.

Wife calls up a pigeon control company. Their assessment is pigeons have made a home under the solar panels. Pigeons will need to be trapped, roof cleaned of bird waste, and then customs wires around the solar panels to the clay roof tiles to prevent new pigeons from repeating what the current pigeons have done.

Wife called me this morning. Two older men working non-stop all day. Tons of bird waste on the patio from the power wash- really nasty my Wife reports. What a mess. Glad she got this under control, and appearently has a competent contractor. Wife never tells me the cost, and I am afraid to ask.

Waiting for the invoice- I am suspecting on or about $5k USD.

at work on our cooling towers we used some of those large plastic owls attached to the roof and towers ,seemed to work as the birds stayed away from the area and no more pigeon turds all over .
