I have a 3.5 VQ in my 04 Maxima and use Mobil 1 T & SUV in it, loves it. Still $20.00 at Wallmart, while AMSOIL is good stuff the price has gotten quite high. I would rather change my oil every 5-6k and not try to set records at my expense.
Pick an Oil : G35 V6 (vq-35) : Amsoil, Redline, Mobil 1 : 40wts only!

i have the same engine in my 03 max and i heard about this engine liking a tad thicker oil as well so i don't use the mobil 1 and use amsoil 5w-30 for winter and summer use.
My engine likes thicker oil? Is this statement backed up by many UOAs that go against the factory engineers recomendations?
I don't see how you could possibly make a mistake by choosing any of those 3 oils (and keeping sensible OCIs).

Eddie, there's this kid in the maxima.org forums, a33black, who posted this picture that he claims is the European oil recommendations chart for a VQ30. Notice specifically that 5W30 is to be used below 59F/15C. He uses 20W50 in FLA summers and 10W40 in winter, IIRC.
The concensus is that Nissan does not manufacture its VQs with separate tolerances to call for different oil weights in Europe, OZ or North America. We all have to thank CAFE for the thinner oils.
p.s. My choice would be M1 T&SUV. Best bang for the buck in that group.

Yes it does, and yes it is. Check out the UOA section for yourself, there's some interesting data there, including some fairly unimpressive UOA with the factory "preferred" 5w-30. Note also that one of the three oils the "factory engineers" specified for this engine is a 40 wt (10w-40) anyway.
My vote, despite the "40 only" parameter, would still be GC. As discussed, it's almost a 40 wt when hot (just a few tenths of a cSt short), and I've had great results with it. Check out the UOAs I've posted on GC used in my G35's VQ. Also, on an admittedly subjective level, my VQ sounds smoother and mellower on GC as compared to the 5w-30 Havo dino I used during its early life. That said, I think you'd be fine with any of the proposed 40 wt choices.
Esso XD3 0w30 or 0w40 shipped pre-paid from an Esso bulk plant in Canada. Landed it will be cheaper than Amsoil or Redline and quite possibly cheaper than Mobil 1 if you buy a case of 12 litres or four 4-litre bottles.
delvac 1 5w40 is NOT the same oil as M1 SUV!!!
ekpolk is correct, again. The VQ will not give up MPG with GC. With these 40 weights, your MPG might go down a bit and I am not convinced that these oils will protect your engine any better.
With the Redline oils, I am not convinced that you need their XW-40. Either of the xw-30 will work fine.

That's exactly the same chart & information that's in the owners handbook of my European Nissan 350Z, with the VQ35DE engine.
Also, for what it's worth, my 350Z has had Castrol SLX 0W-30 in it for the last 4600 miles with a Nissan filter. I've had no noticeable oil consumption and it's only just recently that the oil has started to look anything other than fresh.
So a lot of you guys are saying go with a 5w-40 oil in the VQ engine? depending on climate of course.
