I have a 2005 g35 coupe with the vq-35 engine which is the same engine as a number of nissan cars today. For whatever reason, these engines seem to like thicker oils. So i'm asking all you to pick between the following 3 oils:

amsoil 5w40 european formula
redline 5w40
mobil 1 5w40 (truck and suv).

note: 40wt is acceptable for this car per manual if average driving temps will be above 0f which they always will be.

I would go with either the Amsoil HDD Series 3000 (since it starts out at 12.5 centistrokes - where 12.6 centistrokes is already a 40w oil)

or I would try the AMO (10w40 amsoil)

... I have the same engine and currently I am running a the series 3000.. u can see my oil analysis at g-owners.com .. i am the guy with the amsoil bypass system setup.

Mike, isn't the base recommendation for your G35 a 5W-30? If you really want to run a 40wt, might want to try it in two steps:

Try a quality synthetic 5W-30 or 10W-30 first, and run it for 5,000 miles. Then, do an oil analysis, and see how it's holding up.

If your car is still breaking in, wear metals might seem high. But that doesn't mean the oil isn't working. Take advantage of Dr. Haas' info on lighter oils (especially during the winter, mild as it is in Texas), and then go to a 5W-40 if needed.

This is exactly what I plan on doing with my RAV4, with UOA's after both viscosities have had a chance to show their stuff, winter / summer.

The word acceptable does not mean the best or prefered. In addition; one should consider the driving time at full tempeture as the warm up time is critical.

If you want the best (of your choices): Amsoil...hands down! If you want good but not as expensive: the M1.

In the owner manual it says a 40 weight is acceptable as well as a 30 weight...therefore for simplicity I would just go Mobil 1 5w40, gets great reviews from all types of vehicles.

If I had to choose one of your choices than I would go with Mobil1 5w-40 T&SUV. On the other hand, I too have an '05 vq35 engine in an Altima and I ran factory fill for 1500 miles, then switched to Mobil1 5w-30. It has 21K miles now and I just did my last oil change last week at 5,000 miles with no top off in between and the oil level did not move a measurable amount on the dip stick between changes. Not too shabby for a 5w-30. It was the new M1 SL/SM which is supposed to be "thicker" then the old SL and it does seem a little smoother but that could be my imagination. Oh ya, I average 27MPG calculated the old fashion way. Not sure what I'm supposed to get but 27 didn't seem to bad for such a sporty engine.

Nice ride !

I'd go Redline, but you're in Texas, so why not the 10w40 and skip the VIIs that only the 5w40 Redline is supposed to contain.

mikeinaustin, as you've found by reviewing the UOAs on VQ engines here at BITOG, these engines prefer a heavy 30-weight or a light 40-weight oil. It's really difficult to pick a "best" oil as everyone (clearly!) has a different definition of "best."

For me, as the owner of two VQ engines, I prefer German Castrol 0W-30 (green, but gold has also shown well in the small number of UOAs that have started appearing) or Mobil 0W-40. They straddle the 30/40-weight line like these engines like, and they're easily available where I live for a reasonable price, and they are both excellent performing oils.

However, I pick the 0W oils because I use my VQ to get around in Tahoe in the winter; it sounds like you don't need that kind of temperature protection. As such, I'd go for the M1 T&SUV if it is easily available to you. It, too, is a very fine oil (on par with the others you mention) and it less expensive.

I'd use the Mobil 5w40 just based upon it's excellent reviews, and you can get it easily. But the best UOA I've ever seen on this engine was using Amsoil 0W-30 with Lube Control. Reduced the lead down to single digits, I think...
