I fly a 1956 Cessna 180 and use Phillips XC 20X50 in it year round in Kansas. The engine is a factory reman that I broke in on Phillips 20X50 mineral, switched to AD at 15 hours and now have 625 hours. Oil consumption has been 1 qt per 25 hours, changes at 25 hours, use AVBLEND at each change due to the varied useage of the aircraft. The engine only used 1/4 qt on breakin. Breakin was done by checking for oil leaks, then going directly to the runway, takeoff full power cowl flaps open, ran full throttle and rpm for 1.4 hours when the cylinder head temp dropped. Then ran same setting for 1 hour more, airplane has never used oil.
I was wondering what other experiences users have had with this oil and additive?
Total time on aircraft is 2850.

What engine does your 180 have, Continental or Lycoming?

I have seen Phillips for years but never knew anyone who actually used it. Around here (California), Aeroshell seems to have almost 100% of the market, and most of that is the W100 or W100+, not the multi-grade. Since I rent, not own, oil choice is not up to me.

i have used phillips in a cherokee 180 i flew before i switched to the current grumman cheetah. i found that i prefered the aeroshell in the cheetah to the phillips (even though it is refined nearby), as the phillips went through some uncomfortable color changes as water built up. it did not appear to be holding the water in suspension as well as aeroshell. i also understand it is a little light on corrosion additives. OTOH, it has gotten really good press in radial engine usage, and i know nobody who has had a problem with it.

for the opinion of a person better than i on avblend, look lower in this section. i think it is an approved additive, which means it is legal to put in, nothing more.

Kinda late for a reply, but Aeroshell 100W or 100W plus generally shows lower cylinder and cam wear that any multigrade at overhaul. The Phillips probably won't cause you any problems, unless you consider shortened engine life to be a problem.

Well I have 640 hours on the factory reman now with no oil consumption between 25 hour changes and the oil analysis says the engine looks perfect, I use Avblend and have had no problems. The last engine went 1600 hours with no problems either excpet for a cam problem that was due to it sittingunused for years before I bought it.

A buddy of mine has a 74 Mooney Executive. He has been using the Phillips 20-50 for years and is very happy with it. (He's the kind of guy that would raise holy **** if there was even a hint of a problem)
