I understand them. Have you ever seen a traffic jam on the opposite side of the highway at an accident scene? It is because people like the fealing that it might have happened to them but they dodged the bullet. This filter might have torn but luckily it did not happen. And they saved 50 cents.

The Purolators were the ones tearing not the orange cans. They usually just look wavy. No cellulose media filter is impervious to tearing if abused but some are more prone than others, like the classic and PureOne

Purolator is just another example of how much people like to play with fire. When we see someone's post with a cut Purolator we look for tears. Some feel happy to see the tears. Some feel if there are not tears. Like a hockey match. Nobody feel anything when seeing an OEM Toyota filter because there is nothing new to see ever. I would guess any person who cuts the filters open is a technically educated person to some extent. And still uses a potentially problematic technical solution with his expensive car. It is a game, Russian roulette. I don't blame them.

This is a filter i would never ever use and im not a troll... This is the reason why so many people run away from fram and this was the reason i ran away for years. I am now using their ultra but that is the only fram i would consider for the reasons above..

However i think they improved the ocod slightly..

Lmao. I sense a troll.

If I had been on a forum for less than a year, I wouldn't be calling a 12+ year member a troll.

Lmao. I sense a troll. But anyway, for a cheap filter they're pretty good. I don't see anything wrong with it. I'd run it for 5K-6K with no hesitation. If you want filters that look 100% perfect when you cut them open, you'll have to spend triple the money for a wire-backed media filter.

I'm with Bluestream.

I am with bluestream too. At least get a TG so you have little better efficiency. Or better yet get a solid wix or Hastings in the basic filter category. No need to run one of these unless u like to be a contrarian, because there are plenty of cheaper budget filters that will come out looking much better than a fram EG (like a protec, parts master or even a pronto).

I have explained several times before that my Jeep is picky with filters. Fram behaved the best followed by Mopar/ Motorcraft. WIX and M1 were horrid. I won't use Purolator on my Jeep.

I had read last Fall that Fram may have upped their media in this filter and perhaps the xx8a. This one sure seemed to have held up better than ones I've seen previously here.

Ironically, most of the folks in this thread who don't like it will still run a failure prone Purolator. Makes zero sense to me.

My TG will still be my go to, but if I ever have a short OCI (for whatever reason), I'd go with one of these worry free.

I'm guessing you had startup noise. As an aside, when I first had my LTD, the AC Delco was one of my first choices, since ADBVs were rare at the time, and it was a third the cost of the Motorcraft. I can't think of any silicone ADBV filters, though, at that time.

Did you read the first post?

Don't give up on the thread because of the haters. Still would be interested in a date code and pleat count if you can get it. This one doesn't look like one of the "newer, improved" ones to me.

Here is one of the newer ones. My also picky Jeep liked it and gave me quiet starts. This one was not subjected to winter cold weather starts, but still appears to have more pleats than the OP's. Made in mid-2015.

I see you found my PH16 that was used only in spring and summer months.

Here is my PH16 that seen a few cold starts.

The one I pictured was one of mine. But I had noticed yours previously which was got me thinking they had received a bit of an upgrade. They have. The OP's is a newer one too. When you space pleats that wide though they can get ugly when wavey.

Yours is a new one then. The 36 pleats and September 2015 manufacture confirm it. Previous versions consistently had 31-32.

I just bought an experimental PH8A to see if it got the same upgrade. Will be installed about May 1st. Running a TG8A for the winter months for the silicone ADBV when it's bitter cold out. Will be interesting to see if it works as well as the PH16 did.

The PH8A is also improved. I cut one open not too long ago. It was made in 2015. I didn't snap pics as it got thrown out before I could go and get my camera.

Thanks for the comments...

Let me qualify my first post a bit. Nothing wrong with this filter for an old car. I use a Mann (purolater filter on my daughters $1500 Cavalier. Not going to matter much on that car even though its still in good shape. However to use this filter on anything you care about, when you can buy a quality filter for the same price or a bit more make no sense to me at all.

I have always respected quality products, and this is not one!

I suspected as much, since the PH8A and PH16 have always been so similar. Thanks for the update!

Plan to cut and post my PH8A but that won't be till around November 1st. I do 6 month changes now, May 1st and Nov 1st, since I don't put near as many miles on the Jeep as I used to. Work commute is much shorter.

What bothers me the most about the FRAM construction is when the fiber endcaps deform like the one in the first post there appears to be a strong possibility of losing the seal between the leaf spring and the end cap which would allow the oil to bypass the media.

Every FRAM I have opened up had mediocre pressure against the media to begin with, especially as compared to a wix coil spring.

With marginal pressure against the endcap, and the endcap deformation caused by the pleats distorting, I just see the potential for a filter that isn't actually filtering.

Unfortunately, there is really no way to know if the seal was good on the bypass end. The fact that most of them don't have any kind of seal against the leaf spring and rely on the fiber endcap alone to make that seal is the primary reason why I use other filters.

When you can get a NAPA gold for the same price twice a year, I just dont see the point of a FRAM orange can ... Unless you are the type that just doesn't plan ahead more than a day or two.

^^^ If you can see the impression of the leaf spring and ADBV around the circumference of the center tube hole in the end caps, then it was sealing. No special sealing material is required, as the fiber end cap material deforms and provides a seal as seen by the impression in the end cap.

Note that the Ultra does have a special sealing ring (fiber type material) in the end cap on the leaf spring side, because Fram knew metal-to-metal doesn't sell perfectly.

Yes, that's why I'm guessing you had issues with those examples you listed, and why the Wix and M1 were worst in your experience.

Believe it or not, I just wanted to give one a try after seeing that they possibly increased the media. No procrastination from me whatsoever. I am OCD and use quality parts/ products on the vehicles/ machines I service and am also very anal retentive on PM.

Regarding the seam, it had a decent imprint of where the bypass/ spring combo sat. The fact that it doesn't look good to some people is just web-ineering. If it didn't fail, what's not to like?

As I said earlier, Napa Gold (WIX) filters caused many start up rattle issues with my Jeep. I do run them in the other engines I service though. I have 3 WIX's in service at the moment.
