As most of you know in certain areas Wal-mart has stopped selling Pennzoil Ultra. I ordered a case from Pep Boys and it arrived today with 6 quarts of 5w30 SM. WTH????? The date on the bottles is June 27 2011.Keep it or send it back? Any benefit over SN? Any harm using over 2 year oil (by the time I need it)?

The SM to SN change was a major step change to the new GTL base oils. I liked it before, but so many of the new properties make me feel compelled to use the SN.

SN has been reformulated. It now uses GTL base and has very low NOACK. Will your Jeep be able to tell the difference? I doubt it.

I'd send it back. I hate how parts chains always unload all their outdated stock on people. It's not what you wanted, make them get you some fresh stock.

They may have done it unknowingly. He ordered a case, and there is no mention of API grade on the case of Ultra. You'd have to physically open the case to see what's inside.

However, if they looked really hard, they could have noted the dot matrix printed date code on the box and picked something more recent than June 2011.

No the case contains two bagged bundles of three. It was not a factory sealed case.
Upon closer inspection one bottle is dated May 11 2011. So it appears they are moving old stock and charged full price.

Reminds me of the time I was in Sears and they were trying to get $10 a quart for 90s era Syntec. The bottles were so faded that the usual orange labels were white!

Museum pieces. They should have been worth more than $10/qt.

Haha collector's items! :P

Imagine the ridicule you are receiving over at SITOS (Steve is the oil shipper) when a guy posts about a customer returning oil because it was not new enough....

Don't get me wrong though SM was also a good formula.

Send it back. It is almost humorous how you can find old SL and SJ bottles of oil still for sale on the shelves at certain big box stores. Meijer, I'm looking at you!

It wasn't clear to me if the oil was an instore pickup or delivered to the OP's address(ordered online or instore).

If I ordered oil online or otherwise, and they sent me an oil that I didn't want, I'd certainly call their customer service center and complain diplomaticly. As long as I had the time to wait, I'd send the oil back and make sure that PB's paid all the return shipping for sending me the wrong product(unless it was advertised properly). And to please send me the correct/current standard of oil...SN/GF-5.

Since you have a 2012 vehicle, it does require SN oil. You would be completely right to take it back on that basis alone. Hold out for the SN version of PU.
