Pep Boys Pro Line oil

This is just a crazy opinion question - but what is the deal with that cheap Pep Boys Pro-Line oils?? Who makes them and how bad can they be? I, personally use Mobil 1 fluids in all my vehicles, but I have a cheap nieghbor who uses the Pro-Line and am wondering how it is. I guess I got a little alarmed when I saw cases of the stuff at a local garage too...guess that's how the low cost oil changes can be offered. I always explain to my friends (of which many have been converted) that for the price of an oil change you can do it yourself and use better products.

The one time I used it "to save a nickle"

the car used one quart in 3000 miles. It was a 626 V-6 and never used a drop of GTX. Once I switched back the consumption went back to normal, which was zero measurable usage between OCI's.

I "think" Proline is made by Warren, The same as the Pre-Mobil Supertech. It's ok stuff since it does meet the minimum "SL' or "SJ" requirements.

It's ok for 3K changes but IMHO not as good as your preferance --> Mobil-1

I worked for PepBoys around 1990. Back then their oil was made by Shell. They changed to QS as their supplier around 1993 and I guess Warren when they changed the name to Proline.

Interesting that you bring this up. I was conversing with a relative after our Turkeyday feast yesterday(He's a Pep Boys service writer) and he thinks the ProLine oil is made by Quaker State. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I'm sure the stuff is good for 3k miles in almost any vehicle.
