Pentius PLXL1495P disappointment

Kind of hard to quantify as even one is too many.

I have a PGI (China) made STP 10590 oil filter that has its center tube punch outs like it was double rolled with over lapping holes and thin barbed piece that look like they can break off.
Maybe in the future I'll take my borescope to the parts store. I agree that even one is too many.

Got a case of these recently and took a look inside. Not good...a bunch of the perforations were not completely knocked out of the center tube. I was able to dislodge them easily using a pencil, I would assume oil flow would have dislodged them as well.

I inspected all of the Pentius filters I have on hand for this type of defect. Twelve PLXL2 filters and eleven remaining PLXL10575 filters. My daughter did find one slug that had not been fully punched out in one of the PLXL2 filters. She picked at it with a small screwdriver for a while and was unable to dislodge it. I feel pretty sure it would not have gone anywhere but to be on the safe side I tossed it out. The photo with the flashlight from the outside is before it was picked at and the photo with the borescope is after it was picked at. The borescope came in really handy inspecting the areas by the baseplate and my daughters good eyes came in handy inspecting the rest.
Once again, I will never screw a filter onto any of my vehicles without a thorough inspection for this or any other type of defect. This thread has been a real eye opener for me.

Thanks again. This is number 3 with this problem that I’ve seen online. I have 6 perfect Pentius PLXL 7317’s left from my case and will hold off buying another at this time. Just bought a Microgard Select and will continue with PGI made filters.

This is very disappointing to see. I've been quite impressed with the Korean Pentius 7317s I need for Hondas. Amazon sent me a case of the lower grade MiC ones and they seemed pretty good, but I returned them and got the UFXLs I paid for. They've been consistently excellent.

If the "hanging chad" can't be dislodged with a tool, it sure as heck won't be dislodged by fluid pressure. The force acting on any particular closed hole is vanishingly small, and many times less than just a nudge with a screwdriver or other probing tool would be.

I can understand why someone would be reticent to use a filter with such a defect, but the chances of it it coming loose inside the engine and doing any harm are roughly up there with being attacked by a shark while wearing a wetsuit with a winning powerball ticket in the pocket.

I just took delivery of a case of UFXL 6607s. They are all perfect. These are back ups to my 7317s and also used for some vehicles I care for.

Nothing wrong with the PGI filters, especially now that we have an awesome option in the Carquest EP. But I like the 4 micron tighter media of the Pentius and they’re so cheap for the excellence (or excellent for the price) that I will gladly risk 1 here or there that I can’t use. I’m still getting more than my money’s worth from the remaining good ones.

I’m not going to ditch Pentius because a couple other stock numbers that I don’t use are having issues here and there. Then again, I’m the guy that thinks “leaky” Fram Endurance is nothing to worry about, so maybe just ignore me.

I’m not ready to ditch Pentius but they’re definitely on my watch list now. This QC mishap is concerning to me. This is coming from a big Pentius fan…I call em like I see em. I can’t hammer on First Brands and M+H and not this.

For sure, I don’t think you are being unfair in the least.

Caveat emptor always applies, lest we be lulled into complacency.
