Hi gurus
Apologies if it’s a repeat - tried searching.

2006 Porsche Cayman S. Rebuilt as 3.8 with Nickasil cylinders.

The owners manual calls for:
0W-40, 5W-40, or 5W-50 (flawed “Lokasil” bores stock)
About 8 litres a change. Then uses a little over the life of the oil - flat 6….

The engine builder, and most Porsche specialists, recommend Driven D40 (uncertified with a lot of Zinc and Moly I think) Porsche recommends Mobile 1 (I believe there are several “versions” of M1. Some not so great from a performance standpoint)

In Australia the D40 would cost around A$500 an oil change. Motul slightly cheaper but still $$$.

The “Fully Synthetic” Penrite HPR5 is A40 (Porsche) “approved” and is often available in Oz for about $80/change

Penrite “Premium 0”, also A40, at around A$150/change.

On the Penrite sight the HPR5 is “recommended”, and the “Premium 0”is an “alternative” for this vehicle.

I use the car for fun drives in the hills. Hoping for a track day or two. Plan on 5000km oil changes (after 6800km the HPR5 looked pretty black - if that means anything. I’m used to draining Motul 300V out of my race bikes still looking new)

1. Any comments/warnings about using HPR5 in this expensive engine?

2. “Premium 0” likely to be any better for the engine?

3. Any other recommendations?

Thank you.

Welcome! I don’t know if the Nickasil provides unique lubrication challenges. Assuming it does not, Penrite HPR 5 appears to be a good choice because the MB 229.5 approval indicates that it is at least decent and the price is much lower than the other two oils you mentioned. What do Mobil 1 Euro oils cost there?

I don’t think the Nickasil requires anything special. The original “Lokasil” is problematic. Hence the new cylinders.

I think Mobile 1 “European” is another oil not widely available in Australia. So: super expensive from import or boutique suppliers.

These are what I found locally.
Around double the price of Penrite HPR 5.

It’s going in an expensive car, and I’m used to paying for premium oil (300V in my bikes), but the Porsche holds 8L (8.5 Quarts) and I want to change it at 5000km (3100 miles) intervals or less.

I only want to spend more if I’m getting better protection.

Welcome any comments/info

I would use ESP X4 0W-40 in this engine, it’s got both A40 and C40 but also seems to turn in excellent UOA. For a lot of track use I’d probably use 300V. There’s no reason to believe the Penrite is any better than M1. The Penrites have API SP euro additive packages and most likely have a very similar package to M1 FS 0W-40 and every other Euro full SAPS oil that carries SP.

HPR5 seems preferable if you go Penrite though. It should have a decent HTHS given the higher KV100 and lower VI.

Out of the two Penrite oils, I would go the HPR 5 as that carries formal MB 229.5 approval.

Otherwise Castrol Edge 5W40 / 0W40 or Mobil 1 0W40, as they should all be A3/B4 and Porsche A40.

Any Mobil 1 oil that has actual Porsche A40 approval isn't going to be "not so great from a performance standpoint", nor will any other brand with that approval. Just make sure it isn't "approved" as you use in your post. Easy to check against a Porsche approved oil list.
