can anyone tell what would be a better oil for my 99 grand am 2.4l engine.because i went to wally world and saw Pennzoil Yb for 3.77 a quart or 12.50 for the 5 quart jug and mobile clean 5000 for 2.77 a quart and 11.50 for the 5 quart jug...also can someone tell me why mobile 5000 is so cheap.

It is so cheap Mobil because Wally world worked out a price with the giant. Just pick either one. By now you should be very good at that.

The Mobil is most likely a SM, GF-4 Dino oil that they have to try to unload while the PYB is an up to date API-SN rated oil with a GF-5 rating.

Lots of oil out there that is API-SM, GF-4 that has to be cleared out. IMO....that is the only reason for the lower price.

Both are quality conventional oils. Neither one is going to allow anything to happen to your engine that the other one would've prevented. Either save yourself the buck and get the 5qts of Mobil Clean 5k, or spend the buck and get the 5qts of PYB.

Though, if the PYB is SN and the Mobil Clean is SM, I'd pay the extra buck and try the SN. But that's just b/c I'd like to give it a try, not b/c I think it's that vastly superior to the SM Mobil Clean 5k

We've used it for 5 years in our Crown Vic- good stuff and cheap to top it off.

We run it to around 5000 miles before changing it out.

Both will work in your engine just fine given a reaso nable OCI. Go ahead a save a buck and use it to by some techron for your fuel system.

whats the difference between SM and SN? and would i look on the Pennzoil bottles somewhere to make sure it says SN?

Personally, I think the forecasts of price differences between SM and SN on this board are highly over-rated. Mobil Clean 5000 has always been cheaper than Pennzoil Yellow Bottle at Walmart. Aside from Super Tech, the MC5000 is about the cheapest oil you can buy there, by the quart at least; it's always been in the $2.49-2.59/qt range when I've noticed it.

There's no reason to have to "clear out" SM oil either. ExxonMobil itself has said that it will bring out SN oil when it's ready to, and made it seem like it wasn't in any hurry to do so. SM oil wasn't "recalled" or anything like that. As SN product reaches the stores, it should be put behind the other SM oil and as the SM sells out, folks will start getting the SN. Just like when Kraft introduces a "new and improved" Mac and Cheese. The old stuff won't be clearanced out...the new stuff will start back-filling the old stuff and it'll be a seamless transition.

I haven't seen any price "hikes" as a result of SN either. PYB is its normal self, at $13-14/jug, and a number of other oils (notably, Motorcraft 5W-20 and various grades of Valvoline and SOPUS products) are showing up as SN now also with no price changes.

Save the $1 and go with the Mobil Clean 5000. I'm using it this OCI in our cars and neither of them have blown up yet??????

Around here, not only is Mobil Clean 5000 normally cheaper than other name brand conventionals, but there are often sales that make it even cheaper. I'm still working through a stash of $1.14 a quart MC5K that I got on sale. Mobil 1 synthetic oils are very popular here, but Mobil conventional oils get passed over for other brands (mainly Quaker State). I'm not sure why this is other than habit and local brand preference. In your situation ($1 per quart difference), I'd buy the MC5K.

at one of my local auto shops they have pennzoil yb with the sn on the back.and the sale is for $2.79.

Last time I was at a Wal-mart all the Pennzoil was SN rated while nothing else was. For $1 more, I know which oil I would choose.

I would call MC5k less expensive, not cheap. It's a good oil, IMHO. PYB is also good. Really, either choice is a winner...

i just noticed they also have mobil clean 5000 high mileage.has any one ever tried there hm?

Both motor oils are quality products ,chose which oil meets your budget or your curiosity. Your motor will not know the difference but thank you for using quality lubricants
