The local K-Mart, on their mostly empty oil shelves, has four quarts of SL-rated "Pennzoil Synthetic" 5w30 in a silver bottle but it IS NOT Pennzoil Platinum. Different bottle, shaped like a number 4 with a handle in it. Any idea what this stuff is? Just their old syn before the Platinum moniker, or what?

My PepBoys still has it and is still trying to move it for over $5 per bottle.....

I got the pre-handle bottle synth (34 qts) on closeout at Advance for $2.20 per quart. C'mon..it has Pennzane!

If it'sa not on a closeout sale, I would pay full price for the new Group III Platinum first.... but not at high-pricing K-Mart. If you are going to pay full price for your oil, get it at Wal*Mart.

I asked this in another thread, why does everyone keep calling PP a grp III? Has something changed recently? Last i remember, it was either a grp V, or grp III+. Which group it belonged to was being debated.

Pennzoil with Pennzane always was considered a Group 3 oil. Pennzoil Platinum has been confirmed recently by Pennzoil themselves in another thread that it uses Group 3. Johnny, above, worked for Pennzoil and played a part in confirming that.

But i could've sworn PP had an EOP base which would make it a grp III+ or grp V. So PP is really a group III made from crude?

Those of you looking for a deal on PP might just check out your local Advance Auto. It's on sale for the month of Nov for $5.78 on a buy one get one free deal(2.89/qt). I have the 5w20 in my Honda and no oil usage in 8k miles.Still looks clean with a pure one filter..

I think I'll stop back in, find an assistant manager (in a previous life I was a K-Mart assistant manager) and ask if they'll mark it down. "Uh, see this here is SL-rated, everything else on your shelf is SM and this new Pennzoil Platinum over here replaced it. Mark it down to $1.99 and I'll take it off your hands." Then I'll whip out the Pep Boys ad showing PP at $1.99 with the rebate. Who knows, maybe it'll work.

Thanks Jag and bluupher, cleared up my confusion
