Hello BITOG Members:

Pennzoil here!

Welcome to another Ask Me Anything with Mike Burroughs. Through his company
StanceWorks, Mike celebrates creative vehicle modification on all types of cars, including BMW,
Audi, Volkswagen, and more. He is also creating a custom-made Ferrari F40 from the ground up.
He relies on Pennzoil Platinum® and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum™ Full Synthetic motor oils to protect
his street and race car engines.

Mike is available to answer questions about his latest builds and the engines he needs to keep
running well in his project and personal cars, including the importance of motor oil and oil change
intervals.

Some topics Mike can discuss include:
  • Choosing the right oil for custom and older engines
  • Oil changes/maintenance for cars that have been idle for a while
  • Lessons learned from vehicle builds
The thread will be open for submissions from 12:00 PM ET on Friday, August 15, until 6:00 PM ET
on Friday, August 22. Mike will answer the questions, and the responses will be posted in a
separate thread on Wednesday, September 3.

Pennzoil is excited to kick off this opportunity with Mike! Please note:
  • Please use this thread only to submit questions. If you see questions posed in other threads, please repost them in this thread to help us ensure we address everything.
  • Please understand that Mike may not be able to answer some questions and can only speak about his areas of expertise.
We appreciate the BITOG community’s enthusiasm surrounding Ask Me Anything and are excited
to kick off another Q&A! Let’s get started!

I am a 65 yr. old man now and have used many brands and weights of engine oils in my day. So, I have a what-why- how question about how they do this. Same engine, same viscosity oil, but different brand of oil. Why do some oils quiet your engine down at idle compared to other brands? Also, the infamous butt dyno. Realizing that this only works with your daily driver you are in tune with, but why do some different brands of oil make your engine seem like it accelerates-pulls better with your butt dyno compared to the previous same exact viscosity oil from a different brand? I mean, I have witnessed this through the years, and I wonder how certain oil company's lubricant engineers do this. More moly, higher quality base stocks? A better ring seal giving a little more compression. I know this happens, but it has perplexed me through the years. Can you give me a little insight as to how this is accomplished? Thanks.

Hi, thanks for this great Q&A! #1: what is the difference between Platinum & Platinum High Mileage? #2: why is it getting hard to find 10w-30 in either Platinum Plus or Platinum? #3: Platinum Plus is SP & GF6A, Platinum is SQ & GF7A, why would the "premium" product have the older rating? #4: Platinum & Platinum Plus is made from natural gas, how is this superior to crude?

Thank you!!

Another question: I've read that the only difference in SQ is the aged oil LSPI test, but what octane fuel is being used? There has been no mention of octane rating of fuel used in these tests, or of catastrophic failure events. The computer will adjust the spark to mitigate knock, but these events are independent of spark timing. Are people actually putting lower octane fuel in because they feel safe that the computer will adjust for it? Does Pennzoil account for possible improper fuel use in formulating SP & SQ?

Thanks!

I have a 2016 CR-V, with the 2.4 L gasoline K24w engine. It had 6 runs of oil with factory and dealer averaging out to 4,531 miles per run.

Then I bought it and began using PUP 0W-20 with Fram Ultra oil filters. It's had five runs of PUP averaging out to 3,489 miles per run, and currently is at the beginning of another run of PUP.

Note: I also have used RedLine SI-1 fuel system cleaner at the recommended dose of 1 bottle per 20 gallons, 3 times now, and also actually measure out and add 4.45 mL of SI-1 per gallon used before each fill of gasoline, since I bought this vehicle with 19,877 miles on it and currently its at 44,600 miles.

Re how much PUP cleans, the dip stick had yellow/brown stains on it when I first started using PUP. But now its completely clean and shiny like a piece of polished steel, after 17,449 miles ( when I checked the level after the recent oc ).

It does consume about 3/4 of a quart over each oc of about 3,500 miles for the last couple of runs while using PUP.

It did not consume that much with the dealer fill from when I bought it, and the free dealer fill after I bought it.

During my first run if PUP it used about 1.25 quarts. I checked it fairly often and topped it off with PUP, each run about 3,500 miles.

It required about 3/4 quart topping off for the last 2 runs ( always with PUP ).

It rarely has the dreaded start up raddle. But seams to be more prone to doing it if it is very cold, has sat for a few days, and is near the end of a run of oil ( getting near time for another oc ). And it seams to do it a little bit less often with each additional run of PUP.

VRP is tempting to use for about 20K miles, because of its claim to fame of actually cleaning piston ring groves.

But my seat dino likes the performance of PUP when the vehicle is all warmed up and put into S mode while climbing long winding hills. It's like driving a sports car that somebody plopped a big box on top of it.

And i don't want to change the chemistry of the surfaces inside the engine, by switching to VRP.

I realize that regardless of what oil is used, it must lube the valve guides, cylinders and pistons, and its unrealistic to expect 100 % return back to the sump. So, even an immaculately clean engine is going to consume some oil. Especially with low tension piston-rings.

Still, it would be nice, and very appreciated if Pennzoil posted several yt videos showing how clean pistons are ( without any touch up cleaniing at all ), that were taken from vehicles that ran PUP for many miles. I have seen the one about a 300,000 mile engine. But I think there should be several more.

Please work on actually showing how clean PUP keeps piston rings.

Thanks for making a great oil.

Sincerely,

Signed,

JimPghPA

Hi, I have a 2024 GMC Canyon Elevation 2.7 turbo L3B Hi Out Put 4 cylinder. I was going to use PUP but it's not dexos approved. Oil temps are 225° to as high as 235° driving on interstate NOT pulling / hauling anything.
Your Thoughts Please.
