Hey guys, I bought a 10-30 jug of Pennzoil Platinum for my Mustang GT. I only drive it a couple thousand miles a year and have always used Amsoil, but for half the price I decided to try the Platinum. I change it once a year (only driven in summer). I noticed that the 5-30 jugs are Ford cerified but the 10-30 are not. I got the 10-30 because that is what the manual calls for. Is it a big deal that it doesn't have the WSS approval?

Platinum? where have you been? Pennzoil Ultra is out now. If you are putting Platinum in there, you may as well as be throwing a handful of dirt in the crankcase...

Approvals are almost always more important than a difference in winter rating (10w vs. 5w). You'll probably be okay with the 10w-30, though.

If you decide to stick with Pennzoil Platinum, just get the approved one from now on IMO.

Thanks for the responses guys. Pretty funny HWEaton, I didn't want to spend the exta $8 bucks when everone here seems to like the PP. I just don't get why the 5-30 would be certified and the 10-30 is not.

Because Ford hasn't specified a 10W-30 PCMO in almost 2 decades.

Forgive me if I missed it, but how old is your Mustang and which engine motivates it? As suggested by a previous poster, it must be fairly elderly if it spec-ed 10w-30.

It's a 94 and has the 5.o the manual and sticker under the hood specify 10-30, 5-30 is acceptable for cold weather.

As for as I know the only two WSS approvals for Ford at this time are for 5W-20 and 5W-30. The 10W-30 will be an excellent oil for your 94 5.0L Mustang.

I love PP and you will too.
Forgive me, but I was not aware Ford made a 5.0 in 94 when the body style changed.....just thought it had the 4.6. Fill me in please.

ranger99: 10w30 is fine PP is fine Valvoline Synpower is $4.00 a quart at Walmart in 5 quart jug thats a steal for this excellent synthetic.

The only advantage Ultra would have over PP is cleaning or long OCI, neither of which it sounds like you need.

That's a great choice.

Very good, I feel good about the purchase. To answer some questions about the 5.0L in 94, the first half of the year it came with the 5.0 then second half they changed over to 4.6 (that's the story I heard) I wanted the 5.0 since it is a proven motor.
