Got an oil change at a local shop today; deal with a coupon too good to pass up: $19.95 for QS Defy, labor, oil disposal and a Pennzoil filter....the last part is my question.

Are Pennzoil filters good? When I changed my own oil I got Purolator, usually. Last time it was an Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter to go with a fill of M1-HM. (A great oil, highly recommended, but when I can get Defy for slightly more than half the price, plus have someone change it for me....)

The filter they spun on today is a PZ-21. From the product description at Amazon, I am not worried. Seems pretty standard. Any thoughts on if it would hold up to a 12 month/6K-mile OCI? I probably won't get that far, since this is a Saturn S---but it would be nice to know the filter would make it, if I took a chance.

Thanks.

Pz21 is pretty good. The HPZ21 is the platinum version which is synthetic media. I like them better than the orange cans but I don't have much against a good filter.

Years ago I saw some Pennzoil filters sitting on a shelf in the limited auto section of a drugstore. They had the same part number but the boxes were different sizes. I looked inside and one was noticeably wider than the other. I think one was sourced from Fram (Allied-Signal at the time) and the other by Wix (Dana at the time).

That's the old filter when they were from another source.. They're Purolator and have been for a while..

Fl820s = VO105 (old was that VO47)

the other Sopus Filters (Quaker state) are Purolator Classics.
want proof Purolator makes the Quaker State filters? this is the address for their filter finder, http://www.pureoil.com/qsfilter/search_new.aspx
notice the first part of that address?
then the little icon in that tab, next to the word "search" is the Purolator logo.

looking up filters my car in both theirs (Quaker State) and pennzoil's website, the only part number that is different is the Oil Filter.
(Quaker State uses a fram inspired numbering system, PZ does not. FWIW the #s for my car - Quaker State3614, or a PZ-21) same trans filter, same air filter, same PCV valve.

that leads me to believe that the Pennzoil filters are Puros as well.

I think that is correct, based on the product numbers and the pictures of both filters at Amazon and AAP. I am not enough of an oil/filter geek/expert to know for sure, though. (I found this site through research on tires---which I think about too much, I hear.)

I feel confident running this filter for 6 month/5K miles OCI bare minimum. At that point I got my money's worth, at the least.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. Also apologies for posting this thread in the wrong forum at first. Great site; the navigation takes a little getting used to.

No, it isn't.

so likely the standard Pennzoil filters are Puro classics, and the HPennzoil are(more or less) pure ones?

They have lower efficiency. The regular ones are I believe 94-95% efficient at 20 microns, while the HPennzoil is only 99% @ 30 microns. They say so right on the box, of which we have thousands where I work. Its main advantage appears to be dirt holding capacity.

The regular Pennzoil filters are good, but I would not waste my money on a Platinum when much better filters can be had for less.
